well initially I had the impression that it was costing you $20k from the get go, in which case, it definately would have been a tax deduction.

I will say however that even costello has said howard was a poor treasurer. I believe the high interest rates and poor state of the economy before howard was PM was due to the labour partys job running the country and paying their public servants rediculous sums of money which sent the country flat broke, hence the off shore loans from the middle east prior to howard being elected.

The we had the howard government - AND the first home owner grant, this is with howard as PM and not as treasurer. I vote for the liberals not just for howard, but because I believe their team is pretty much bullet proof when compared to what we have currently on offer from the labour whiners.

you just sold your property? so how much did it increase in value? so with one hand you are holding 100's of thousands of $$$ and the other your holding $20k (maybe - but more than likely 5 or 10k from the sounds of it) well it sounds to me like your looking at the glass half empty.

nothing personal, but howards made you and everybody else who had / has property around that time a sh*tload of money with that home owner grant and what it did to property prices around the country. (ESPECIALLY SYNDEYSIDERS)

there was a time in my family when we even voted labour, and at a point the liberals were sh*t, but at present the liberals have clearly got their game together, whats the saying - "ITS THE ECONOMY STUPID"

lowest unemployment ever

low interest rates when compared to labours rates

no debt as a nation (except for the LABOUR states of course!!!)

Labour doesnt support business and it never will, you might want to ask yourself how much that 20k is worth to you under a labour government, I reckon it would balloon out to a rediculous figure. Business runs the economy, and the liberals support business. If its hard for business, the economy goes to sh*t!

Howards acting like hes already lost because hes playing the underdog, and he'll get a lot of votes come election day that way. & all these protesters are just doing howard a favour.

APEC doesn't suck, it's the dickheads attending that suck and the those clowns that call themselves security. Go the Chaser, brilliant move. The old fake motorcade trick and fake flag. Who'd have thunk terrorists could be so sneaky.

wesleyt, I am one of Howards battlers, I bought in the burbs of syd in late 02. Because of Howards first home buyers grant house prices skyrocketed. I was unable to use this as this was my second home. I bought for 475k and spend 65k on renos.

In 6 months the house was worth 580k. Then the bubble burst. I had my own business for a year and couldn't make ends meet, went back to the office.

For the last 3 years I've been trying to sell and nothing. Because I am still owing close to 1/2 a million I need over then to sell. I can't get over 480k. Please take these into consideration.

Giving people a head start is great so long as they can sustain the mortgage in the long run. There is a lot of poor folk that bought with the first home buyer grant and had their homes taken away from them by the banks because they folded on the loan.

Labour may have had higher interest rate, but mortgagees had lower amounts owing. An interest rate rise of .25% on 500k is the same as 1% on a loan of 125k.

I like Zap may have to give up and sell my house and go out and rent. With 2 kids this is not an option I take lightly especially after spending losing 100k in interest repayments in 3 years.

I Kevin 07 the answer? I don't think so, but Howard will become Costello, Costello is great and economy, Costello is a glorified Accountant not a CEO. Rudd is a CEO.

I just hope these APEC talks get some more work and torism for us.

Ozzie

That's OH&S for you!

EDIT:

I realize it's a bit off-topic, but what's with the misconception that a business expense directly equals a tax deduction? A business expense will lower your profit, and in turn the tax payable on that profit - if every dollar spent on an expense equals a dollar less tax then you've got bigger things to worry about!

I realise what your saying, everybodys got different circumstances, and theres always other factors, but if anybody over borrowed initially before the boom, and then ran into trouble with their mortgage then that's hardly howards fault, or any government for that matter.

They had a lady on the news the other day that had her home for 20 years, and her husband died, and she couldnt make the repayments, she also had a semi-retarded daughter, and I think it was a current affair that played this off with rising interest rates etc. saying it was the howard governments fault etc.

This is hardly a fair scenario, every where you look there will be heartache and dilema in all walks of life. but for the vast majority of people that did buy, before and during the boom, they are generally a lot better off, most of those people wouldnt even have a home if it wernt for the home owner grant, and while I can see that not everybody can benefit from it, it was done because housing was in a slump, and the economy needed a helping hand at the time...

so rather than say "this is the recession we had to have" and sitting on their hands, the liberals got of their arses and did what they could, I.e. the home owner grant. and while I myself didnt benefit in a huge degree, I can fully appreciate the benifit other people have got, and the amount of work I have painting and renovating homes at the moment, which is a direct result of soaring property prices.

I also think, and so do plenty of other people, that costello will be a better leader than howard anyways, and from my experience, accountants know everything about business, because they need to fully understand it. unlike C.E.O's who dont know where the moneys going half the time.

Mate your not a bean counter yourself are you??? :buttrock:

The bad thing about accountants is they only think money... there are other things in life...

BTW I don't blame Howard for my over borrowing, but his policies have contributed in the realestate boom and bust, that effects me.

Back to APEC, did anybody else notice that the Russian President didn't salute back to the Aussie General when he arrived off the plane?

It is millitary protocol or some other BS.
