Hi all,

I'm in the process of rebuilding my 4-speed in my XR6-T. I'm thinking of just sticking with the BTR and running a 2800-3500rpm stall convertor. Anyone had any experience with convertors on these 4-speeds? I've been told that the C9/C10 is alot stronger but doesnt allow tiptronic?? Any thoughts would help. Looking at spending around $3800-4500.

A C9/10 is an old 3 speed non electronic auto. Very old technology and only suited to a full race version of an XRT as it would be a pain in the arse around town and on the highway as it lacks a 4th gear and overdrive, and is very unrefined and rough. They are strong though and can be built to handle big power, just depends what you want to do. BTR 4 speeds can be built to handle decent power levels and you can keep the 4th gear and overdrive and also the sequential shift which the C10 can't have. Are you building a street car or a drag car.

I have a 3-speed C9 and it is very streetable. It depends what you like. It has a fully manualised valve body. The car consumes more fuel as it has no overdrive, but will handle reasonably big power. The conversion will cost you around $9,000, depending to what specs you get the C9 built to - as they can be built to handle different power levels as well.

If you are looking at 400rwkw dont bother with the 4 speed at the moment unless you like rebuilding it regulary. I would love a c9 conversion but cant justify the cash difference at the moment

I have a c9 3 speed that I just absolutly killed, sreaded gears. this was with 303rwkw, I was under the impression that it would hold alot more so now after paying to have it rebiult I can say no, its not worth the money!!! although the guys that we got rebuilt it made wure this time it will hold well into the 500plus mark.

my ute is running a dominello modified btr with a 2800 stall and

I have not had any problems with 418rwkw. the box has handled

around the 400 level for approx 10,000 klms.

cheers geoff

Have you dragged it with slicks on, because that is the killer, on the street they seem to be holding on, ive been running 360rwkw in my 4 speed for a while(modded 4 speed) and dragged with it, ill let you know how long it lasts at 400rwkw on a drag strip soon. friends I know cant seem to go patst 400rwkw before breaking them, not to say the odd one wont hold on.

that's bad luck rapid chris, maybe I should consider a powerglide

My C9 cooked itself with 306rwkw. When I had it rebuilt again, I made sure also that it would hod serious HP and had all the good bits fitted - including a transbrake. that's why I said that you need to consider this right from the start. Having spent a minimum of $15K now of gearboxes in less than 2-years from buying the car new, I beleieve I have finally got a box configuration which will last...atleast for the next power stage. :spoton:

I hope.....

I also destroyed the C9 in my car, then had the whole lot redone, converter, new oil cooler with braided lines this time, braided dipstick etc, now believing that it should hang on for anymore power that might get thrown at the car.

I considered opting for a 2 speed Powerglide at the time, but with street action in mind, the choice of 3 gear's was a slightly better option.

A 4 speed Ford auto would be better again, but even with alot of the guarantee's getting thrown around that they are now indestructible after a "full" rebuild, I'm yet to be convinced.

It kind of remind's me of back in my VL Turbo day's where everyone was getting their factory 4 speed Jatco boxes rebuilt, yet were still breaking them, so sometimes there was no choice but to retrofit a 3 speed Trimatic.
