Hey all, I'm looking for a nice small digicam that can record on small media such as small dvd discs and also backup to external hard drive through a pc or not, I am thinking of taking one on holidays with me. I've been looking at the Canons and Sonys but am interested to see what some of you might recommend?

I cant give you a Recomendation on a video camera as I dont normally use consumer ones.

Things I would look for is 3 CCD, 16:9 format and HDV if you can get it.

Storage media.

DVD, these are normally 4.7G which is not a lot of video unless you compress the hell out of it. Susceptible to vibration and write errors.

Hard drives, good but if you fill it you need some where to down load it. Video takes up a lot of hard drive space.

DV/HDV Tapes. 60 min of uncompressed video on one small tape, Still the best way to record and store video.

I have a JVC Everio, does widescreen, 30gig hard drive takes around 12hours non stop on high res and 36hours on low res... great for mounting in the car and leaving it to record all day

I'm with 72,

Go for HDV. When I was doing reserch in to my Cam I found the harddrives still don't have the safety feature in place. If you drop a HD Cam the Cam will sense the drop and cut power to the HD hopefully meaning no impact damage to the data stored on the HD. Main problem is if you are on holidays and can't get to a laptop or pc you are limited to what you have. With HDV just put in another tape an off you go...

PS I ended up with a Sony HDV great lense, great steady shot and night shot.

AVCHD is great, but buying a computer that is powerful enough to crunch the video is going to be painful. Quad core anyone.
