Diff Noise When Turning

I took my ute to Ford about 6 months ago to fix a whine at about 80 km/h. When I got the car back the whine was gone at 80 km/h but was present at 100km/h. Anyhow I dealt with it . A few months after that a new noise appeared. When turning and accelarating It sounds like metal on metal noise coming from the diff. Sounds a bit like when your brakes are gone and you are rubbing metal to metal. This noise is getting worse everyday. I think it may have something to do with the LSD as the wheels turn at different speeds when turning. Does anyone know what could be the problem. Does Ford have warranty on their work even though the car is out of warranty. Thanks

I personally have found the whine in certain diffs I have had only to happen when the car is moving or the music is loud..

When it is stopped it is usually quite

My diff is quite but when doing freeway speeds of 100 to 110 there is a vibration noise also. I think it may have been from the extreme clutch and lightened flywheel. Since then I have installed a Mal Wood option 5 will have to see if noise has gone away still bedding in. Good luck with your issue try changing diff oil to royal purple and have you checked if there are any leaks. Is your car lowered could be putting extra stress on your CV joints especially if its a manual.

Cheers Alf.

Years ago I had an LTD with a LSD that had a very similar problem which was caused by me replacing the diff oil with the wrong grade. Once the right stuff was put in it was fine. Noting that the T needs a different grade oil to N/A Falcons plus an additive (Styroco or something) you might want to have a look at that.

Thanks Muz this did cross my mind. Maybe they did put the wrong oil in or even worse not enough.

Sounds like the cones in the LSD are on the way out :flick_flex:

Try replacing the oil first and if it's still there headto the local diff specialist. Fraud wont cover it under warranty even if it is related to the work they did previously... they'll claim its unrelated and charge through the roof :stupid::blush:

I changed my diff oil to SAF-XA and what do you know, the noise has completly gone. I cant believe that Ford put the wrong oil in, gives me the sh*ts. I hope that driving around with the wrong oil in the diff for 10 months didnt damage anything. I was going to take my car to Ford to get the clutch replaced, definately not now. I recommend this Castrol fully synthetic oil, the handbook even says to change the oil every 7500km in frequent or prolonged high speeds.

My car is doing this too when turning sharp and reversing..

I got my neighbour to check it out for me today and the diff oil is like soup! I don't think its been changed since I've had the car (bit over a year) so I'm hoping that's all the problem is!!

I'm glad to read this as I was worried I'd need a new diff! Hopefully it doesn't come to that!
