Clunking Suspension

Have had an increasing occurence of a clunk somewhere in the suspension/steering when driving (mostly reversing)

Have tried to see what it may be, but it doesn't appear as if the wheel or suspension is fouling- any ideas?

I have also been finding the gearbox a little clunky at times, it's an auto, done just shy on 15000klms.

Mate, it could be the steering rack giving up the ghost. Happened to me around the 10,000 mark. It's another series one thing they are aware of. Getting it checked out ASAP would be advisable.

I had the clunk in the front end.

had the service dept look at it today and it was the steering rack.

they remove the rack from the car and lubricat the mounting rubbers then put it all back to gether again.

1axr exactly the same for me, they lubricated the mounting bolts that hold the rack to the chassis (I think!), clunk gone completely.

Much happier now. Much quieter now!

Had the service and picked up the car- no fault found but the lubricated the mounts and checked the steering mechanism (re Recall). Next day straight back there to try and show them the problem, but as usual it happend to stop doing it on the way there. I did manage to fault it twice for the foreman, and the car is going back again.

Apparently mine is more an issue when the whole mechanism is cold. At least I know what it is now- steering and not suspension.

Just got back from a cruise from Darwin to Ayres Rock and back.

After booking into the hotel at Alice Springs, we were off to a mates place and noticed clunking noise in right front - seemed to occur on full right lock.

Next day spoke to Centralian Motors and they suggested brining it in that afternoon. I did, and they wanted me to show them the clunking sound (well let them hear it). It did it on full lock just goiong out the driveway and the mechanic assured me that it was either of the two known problems: lack of grease on the ball joints or tightening the mounting bolts that hold the rack to the chassis.

They asked me to bring it in first thing the next morning and they would put her up on the hoist and we could get back on our way.

Got there is the freezing cold morning - they put the car on the hoist and the supervisor came to the reception area to tell me that:

"THE FRONT RIGHT SWAY BAR WAS BROKEN"!!!!

It was going to be two days (or more) to get the part from Melbourne, but they canabalised a part from one of the new BAs in the yard.

I asked them to show me the broken part. It was sheared right through, but by the look of it there was only a small oval shape in the middle of the part that held it together. It looked like it had a groove cut around where it sheared.

The part was going to go back to FoMoCo for the engineers to evaluate and the problem will be put in their database.

At that stage the car had done just over 4000 KM. Those of you that know will testify that the Stuart Hwy is one of the nicest bits of road in Oz.

Thanks to the guys at Centralian Motors for getting us back on the road so quickly.

This was an interesting experience.

cheers

Stevo
