Driving Impressions

Well, after finally taking an XR6T for a test drive I was curious to know what everyone's impressions were. Here are a few of mine - and I'm comparing them against my driving experiences in the 200SX and VT Berlina:

1. Feels a lot smaller than the VT - seems to wrap around you without being claustrophobic but definitely gives you a bit more confidence on the road because you don't feel like you're driving a tank.

2. Didn't notice the weight until I went to stop quickly. Brakes have a bit less feel initially than the 200SX but have more than enough bite for short stints of hard driving.

3. Much better front-rear balance than the VT when cornering.

4. More luxurious ride than the 200SX but with similar degrees of body role (ie not much). To be perfectly honest, where I know there to be definite bumps and irregularities in the road that are very noticeable by the 200SX, I don't recall them at all in the XR6T.

5. Auto feels "only" as quick as a manual 200SX.

6. Speedo is very busy - took a little bit of time to see what speed I was actually on.

7. Cornering hard on round abouts it has more turn in understeer than the 200SX but is more neutral front-back than the 200SX making it easier to induce throttle oversteer - even with the Traction Control on, and no, it wasn't raining!

8. Steering wheel is nice and direct making it feel almost as agile as the 200SX.

9. This is probably a getting use to it thing but downchanging more than one gear at the auto box sometimes didn't register the double change and I found myself having to try and change again.

10. When I did change a gear in the auto box it happened fairly quickly - minimal wait time and I'd have to say it's a better unit than the Mitsubishi equivalent.

11. My wife doesn't complain as much when going around corners fast because the seats hold her in well.

Guys,

Re the sound deadining in the boot. All Fairmonts get this stuff on the inside of the boot lid. Not sure about the Futura.? So it should be a spare part that should be able to be ordered and installed.?? There are a few things in the Fairmont that I would like to add.. Bring back the sunglasses holder... (I think the Fairmont has it??)

I took a mates one out the other day, and WOW...

When he was driving around corners the car stayed flat, I didn't budge what so ever (My wife usually complains about that when I drive). It looks awesome, I am def. getting leather and sunroof.

The standard steering wheel is beautiful, small enough to be comfortable, big enough to make easy turns. The pedals are placed in exactly the right place (unlike my old mans VN, got to twist your ankle to use the accel.). It didn't have as much power as I expected, but hey it's a new car so you don't feel it anyway (when your in a VN doing 100, you know your doing 100. In an BA XR, 160 feels like 40).

It was nice and roomey, perfect for a big boy like me, the shifter was placed perfectly, as I rest my arm on the console all the time. The shifter will take some time to get used to, but it was fun.

I loved it.

Any one know of a perm job opening up so I can go out and buy one? :)

Also the standard brakes are pretty awesome, done 2 or 3 hard stops and they worked like a dream. No fading what so ever.

Did smell a bit, but I love the smell anyway :)

Spare parts rang me today to let me know that my scuff plates have arrived i asked about the boot liner it's $110 unfitted + bloody gst as well i guess, :ermm: You pay 50g's for a car you reckon they'd have one installed already (unless it's a wieght saving).

It could be that some people enjoy the sound. I certainly don't have any complaints about the NVH at any speed - and I was driving with the stereo off.

Hey Everone,

Nice to have a forum for the XR6T:)

I went in a testdrive for the new XR6T, was manual. It absolutely will hammer anything out there, but I felt a bit of turbo lag till 2500 maybe?

How does it feel in auto? I mean turn off the TC, and floor it. Does it spin nicely or starts slowly and then guns it??

After the new XR8 news, it still might be a good bang for buck even if compared to the $43000 XR6T.

the gearbox wont let you down change until it is going to be a pre set amount of revs and km/h when its in the next gear. Can be frustrating. If you still think it is later on when your used to the rest of the car then this tell me you should have bought the manual!!! Like me.

The ride on these cars is great. I had a fairmont before and the ride is better in the XR!!!!

have many of you found this wrong with the cars? I have a list but they are generally small things.
