The newer the model the better it is, but you will still find some very good low Ks 2002/03 cars.

The only one to stay away from is the BA MkI 5 speed manual.

I have a 2004 5-speed, with a minor edit done by MRT (only 7psi) and I haven't had a problem?

I see you have a 03 too. I proberbly won't be modifying it in the close future, if that will detriment fuel economy, I'm just sick of driving around my v6 commodore, still getting double digit fuel economy, with no performance at all.

It's going to be different for each vehicle. It always depends on how the car has been treated from day dot. As far as drivetrain is concerned it's going to be luck of the draw (even brand new ones have drivetrain issues) but you can usually tell that from a test drive. Also driven by old people it not necessarily a good thing! Turbo cars NEED a good drive every now and then to get rid of carbon that builds up. If it is grandma'd for its whole life the engine will be sluggish and poor economy. This can be fixed with a good carbon clean, some ultimate 98, octane boost and a nice long cruise down a highway with some hard acceleration

As far as modifications and economy are concerned... before edit I was getting around 450 - 500km per tank (550 on long drives)... now I get 530 - 560 per tank (over 600 on long drives) and that's mixed driving - in a way it's paying for itself
