Buying A Xr6 Turbo, Is There Any Problem With The Mk1's?

I have a MK1 Turbo and must say it is a superb vehicle. If you do a little searching and have patience there are a few good opportunities to upgrade your vehicle to a standard that you are comfortable with / desire, without spending more on a MKII, for example, I sourced a set of new premium brakes from a BF turbo and a ICC unit that had the six disc changer in from GT both at very good prices.

The five speed manual does have a bad reputation, but unless you are horse power hunting it is slightly exaggerated. I’m running 265rwkw with a stronger clutch and it is a pleasure to drive. I can reach 0-100km in approximately 4.5 – 4.75 seconds without fear of transmission damage.

Its depends on the cash you have man. If you have the money, by all means go all out and buy the BF, you only live once

But if your on a budget for around 25k you can have a nice 03 with leather, premium sound, get a cheap DBA brake and brakepad upgrade, get a BMC filter with typhoon CAI, custom tune and be running a 250rwkw beast. that's what ive done and I'm as happy as a pig in mud.

Plus you can drive it around all day off boost like a normal car which saves on fuel.

My car has the diff whine that you may read about, I just got used to it. It also has this annoying scrapping sound when driving at low speeds from the handbrake. But other than that I would have to say it is the best thing I have purchased in my life.

Im an ex Expensive Daewoo man myself mate, and everytime I chop a VY/VX Clubby/SS I thank god I didn't buy one.

I got myself my late o3 model T a few months ago I really really wanted to get a bf so I could get the zf 6 speed but was outta my price limits so after taking a few mk 1s for test drives I decided to get 1 drives awesome had few lil electrical probs but everything else has been sweet and still loving it

One more question, how do you guys find fuel economy is on highway trips? I'm going to be putting alot of miles on this car driving 150km round trips to uni 4 times a week. I'm hoping 10L/100km will be achievable.

10l/100km and perhaps better is achievable under freeway conditions with a fully loaded car at 110km/hour in 4 speed auto.

Lower loading and in particular lower speed will improve fuel economy.

Now the other side of the story.

These cars when running 98 octane and driven with some sympathy as to how they deliver power are smooth and fast.

When driving an XR6T the general traffic appears to have inexplicably slowed down when leaving lights and intersections. With smooth throttle application there is little conventional sensation of speed. Driven in this way the engine has time to build airflow over the intercooler and to build boost and torque. It more or less reaches a low operating RPM and stays there letting the torque convertor act as variable transmission whilst the car builds speed - no direct correlation of revs with speed. When the box changes rations it is again very smooth.

Driven in this way you will find that whilst you peak speeds are the same as the general traffic, you reach traffic speed without any fuss and well before everyone else.

The upshot is 14l/100km mixture for suburban diving.

Now the other, other side of the story.

These cars are great, great drives.

Ba MK1s are a bargain ... Auto or Manual they are a good thing. You can get lemons in any make or model of car so get it inspected by a good mechanic.

They will handle up around 300 rwkw without too much trouble. The biggest problem is that the original MK1 blocks had thin cyilinder bore walls.

Just get an edit and custom tune and you will do better than 10 l/100ks in the country and about 15l/100ks in the city (depending on your driving style.

sounds much like my Late model camira uses, that's amazing, these cars have close to 100 more kw.

It sounds like they meet the bill perfectly, I see why they have such a large cult following, no comes the trying to find a MK1 close to 20k effort.

I got a manual xrt, is there anything I can do to make it hold high power. or do I have to change the tranny. what are my options

I got my 03 XR6T 4sp Auto, Leather interior, premium sound, 70km's, for NZ$22k (bout $20k Aussie) in February and absolutely love the car. Plus I got an 18month full mechanical warranty and roadside assist thrown in. I've never thought twice about the purchase, in fact, for the amount of car for the price, I feel like I robbed the guy I bought it off.

Don't think, just buy. You will not regret the decision!
