Buying A Xr6 Turbo, Is There Any Problem With The Mk1's?

Ah hey guys, I'm in the market for a XR6 turbo. I was just wondering is there any major specific differences between the year revisions?

I'm interested in a auto model, and some of the original BA's are at a very attractive price. Basically would I be stupid to jump into a 2003 model?

I test drove a brand new BF XR6T ZF6 speed today, absolutely loved it, the gearbox is superb, and the tiptronic function is actually quite useful. I am hoping this experience can be recreated in something a little more wallet friendly.

Anyway, I'm a long Expensive Daewoo supporter, but have been lured to the ford camp by a superior product (the pre-VE Holdens look agricultural compared to the BA-BF).

Sorry if this is a repost, I couldn't see a sticky on the topic, I really just want to know, if I would be better of saving for a bit longer for a MK2 BA, or a BF even. Ie from memory, the drivetrains of the MK1's were flawed?

The newer the model the better it is, but you will still find some very good low Ks 2002/03 cars.

The only one to stay away from is the BA MkI 5 speed manual.

If it's an auto then I'd say you will have a very good reliable car, but watch out for the T5 manuals as they can be a bit fragile. Having said that I'm still giving my T5 grief and it's been good to me. Only thing I would change on a stock BA T is the brakes (and an edit when you get used to the car). The standard brakes are a bit dodgey under temp.

I made a similar thread on fordforums, and also there was very little useful responses, one guy did mention when you add power to the MK1's, they require gearbox strengthening (in the autos) which the subsequent models don't.

If you add decent power to these Cars, you will a have to upgrade the clutch or the auto.

There are plenty of vehicles going around with moderate power increases without modifying the gearbox. It all depends on how far you want to go. An 03 T is probably excellent value as long as it hasn't done more than 150k

at that point do they have excessive drivetrain and turbo wear? The one I'm looking at has actually only covered 70,000, its a 03, in silver. Driven by old people.

I see you have a 03 too. I proberbly won't be modifying it in the close future, if that will detriment fuel economy, I'm just sick of driving around my v6 commodore, still getting double digit fuel economy, with no performance at all.

What's wrong with the BA Mk1 manual?

I just bought an 04 with around 15,000ks on the clock - anything I need to look out for?

The early manuals are fine, its just the gearbox doesnt handle alot of extra power.

If you dont plan to mod, you have nothing to worry about

Yeah the T5 was my only regret, if I had of known at the time I would of kicked in a bit more for a T56
