well its been at least 8 months since the motor threw a rod. so I think it was about time id show it some attention and get around at repairing it.

pulling it appart I found this

and this

am I right in thinking that the white coating on the valves and on the inner turbo means that the car was running lean?

could also be a sign of coolant entry into the combustion chamber that tends to steam clean everything as well. Unlikely that you would get it in the exhaust side tho. My turbo was the same color as this when i pulled me engine down. I don't think its unusual as they run at some pretty high temps.

all the valves are white, the ones to the left look darker cos of the shaddow from the flash.. they look very white and it wasnt from coolant bleaching as the cooling system was full and never had been topped up.

the spark plugs were also white at the tip.. I thought these engines had multiple knock sensors that would retard the ignition in order to keep the engine safe.

unless the tuner turned the sensors off. which I dont think he did

ok pulling the engine out i found some scorched wiring in the top left hand corner that plugs into this sensor..

seosor.jpg.

what does this sensor do? is it a knock sensor?

Thats a cam position sensor. The knock sensors(s) are on the lhs of the engine down under the inlet manifold. The are round with a bolt directly in the centre of them. Damaged wiring on th cam phasing posi sensor is pretty common. :spoton:

Ps...luurrve the "shackle" on the rear engine lifting eye.

well if she was all white then id suspect your running lean for sure... running lean doesnt gaurantee ping or det though, and may not be the cause of your dead engine, only increases the liklihood... goin full forged now eh?
