Ram Cold Air Intake

Hi guys,

I'm new to all this forum stuff... just joined the other day, so hello to everyone. I was just wondering if it is worth my time making a ram air intake for my car or not. It has a BF GT front bar, and I was thinking along the lines of fibreglassing a funnel-like structure which tapers off to a 3 inch pipe into the airbox. From the airbox to the throttle body is 3 inch piping already. It would take up the whole bottom mouth of the bar, and then the hose would join the fibreglass funnel under the radiator and run behind it up to the air box. Having the potential there and not tapping into it is annoying. I've tried to upload a pic of my car - about 6mnths old. So far I can see the Pros as the following:

Increased fuel efficiency, increased response from pressure - the faster you go the better (like sticking your hand out the window at 100km/h just with 10X greater surface area, induction noise?, increased efficiency could make up for the loss in shorter diff ratio engine revs and fuel consumption (will be getting 3.9 or 3.73).

Cons:

quite some hassle making one from scratch, very low to the ground so may pick up lots of dirt, sand, and worrying in the wet if I hit a moderate puddle if the water is forced into the engine.

Not sure what to do or if it is worth my time, haven't heard of anyone else doing this on a BA before and so have come to seek your professional opinion/suggestions/advice. Look forward to talking to all of you in the future (don't know how to use the icons yet, so smiley face goes here!)

yeah, I thought about that. only 2 inches deep of the radiator is exposed in the bottom bar though. I mean look at the BA MK1 XT falcon, god knows how you get enough air through the bottom there but it all works out fine. I would put those air scoops that you get with the SS inductions kit except reversed, so this way the air in the top grille is forced downward across the radiator. in the FPV website gallery they have a pic of the GT's front grille close up and you can see just the very bottom of the radiator. if it seems a problem I could just mount it a little lower down anyway

I thought about doing this too.. but using the passenger side hole where the foglight is for allowing the airflow.. I didnt get much luck as far as responses about if it would work or not.. Havnt tried it yet, but good luck and I hope someone helps you with this.. I think a few people may have thought about it.. but never tried as we dont know how it would preform and if it is worth it? I want to have a 3-4" pipe from the TB going down to a K&N pod filter which sits down near the opening of the bar.. this would suck the cold air.. and also prevent the dirt getting in..

Just an update... I decided to go for the F6 CAI, heck if its good enough for a stock 270kw engine its good enough for my n/a 6. Cost $103 inc. tax for the XR6T upper intake and the XR8 lower headlight snorkel, installation was simple. I have noticed a difference already, suprisingly more lower down in the revs, maybe because of less vacuum in the intake tube? The reason I chose this was because the air rammed in through the lower bar would just build pressure up under the headlight anyway, and I wouldn't have to worry about the dirt, water, etc. Also, for $100 you can't really go wrong :spoton:
