When I picked up my car, The salesman pointed to a little gadget with a flashing LED that was wired to my battery and told me that is was the electronic rust preventer. This I belive is fitted if you spring for the defense pack.

My question is: Does this actually work? I'm aware of sacrificial anodes being used but an electric device that sends out rust preventing pulses?

anybody know anything about oxidation processes and electronic prevention?

Is this a Peter Brock polerizer or does it actually work?

Corrosion is an electro-chemical phenomenon - so it is possible that there would be any electrical solution to the problem.

Perhaps the "box" sends does something to disrupt the electro-chemical process therby stopping corrosion from occuring???

My chemistry is a bit "rusty" perhaps there are more knolegeable people out there for this subject.

Sounds like cathodic protection, but like Cam my chemistry is pathetic these days.

Its used on Ships, Oil rigs etc but seems to be unnessecary on a car, especially one with a corrosion warranty. Maybe a smart bit of marketing to sell the defense pack perhaps?

Thanks Steve,

I'm a bit of a sceptic :geek: so I wasn't sure, it seemed within the relms of plausability to me though.

Yeah its just Sacrificial Cathodic(Bless their little hearts) Protection. We had an aftermarket one installed in our EA...it rusted out!Found out it was installed utterly incorectly..ie no annodes...

In our EB (where it was installed by a Auto Electrician who knows what hes doing)it still has no rust over a YEAR later and we are a stones throw from the beach and the air is so salty you dont need to season steak.

Just found this thread.

Sixfan - I'm in the same boat as you now, wondering if this thing is too good to be true.

After 2 years how has it performed? I know too early to probably know.

Check your door hinges for me - any sign of rust stains?

Cheers

I was sceptical about these gadgets as well but I have been installing these units for 8 years I probably cant mention my products name but I can say that they work extremly well if you get the right one.the firm I get my units from are local to queensland and have been csiro tested .I have had them on several cars of my own including the t.and have fitted over 200 in 8 years, with nothing but good reports.they have lifetime warranty against rust (on new cars)

basically a negative voltage is sent through the vehicle its about 400volts

(negative).the units use the paint in your car to travel around the car .

rust forms when the metal loses its negative electrons because the iron in the metal is trying to revert back to iron ore,the units flood the metal in your car with negative electrons ,replacing the ones it loses.and your car wont rust.

no its not a cathodic system they dont work on cars.

there is alot more to the process and I can supply information just pm me

hope this helps.

Hey Simmo you're around me somewhere hey? (Im in Yamab) Most cars round here dont last very long with out some form of rust creeping in very quickly! The rust-protect we use is Counter-Act (I think that's it) and has worked brilliantly everytime. It's been on three cars now!
