The size of your brakes will not make any difference in a one stop situation.

All the pads need to do is grab the rotor and stop it from spinning, all modern brake systems out there are capable of doing this.

The only difference bigger brakes will make is that you'll be able to do it over and over again without fading the brakes.

The biggest factor in situations like this are your tyres. I don't care how much sh*t I cop for buying great tyres and keeping small diametre rims (17" 18") so I can afford the great tyres, if they save me and my family from a stupid mistake I made, or allow me to swerve to miss someone elses stupid mistake they have just paid for themselves.

Big heavy high power cars like the XR6T need great tyres, not second rate tyres.

Cro is spot on with these comments.

The (too) big wheel and tyre fashion for cars is akin to the stiletto heel for women. Looks good but you are not going anywhere fast and the possibility of coming unstuck in some conditions is huge.

For vehicles in general where ever possible, quality, (design and materials) should be improved before going for bigger heavier components. The first path generally has far less unwanted side effects. You may eventually need to go bigger but it should be a last not first resort.

Regards,

aa

water was running off an embankment...little sus though because it hadn't rained all day and the accident was in the evening. Was thinking it may have been a leaking pipe or similar as the water flowing and definitely more than just 'surface moisture' in places.

Just a bit of a shock how quickly the car came unstuck....obviously it happened all very fast, but I think I must have just got on the accelerator (and probably boost) at the exact moment I hit the water and it was all over after that. :hag:

Thanks for the sympathy and hopefully the car will be fine...or if a right off I'll be back with a similar beast!

ABS was introduced for bad drivers. Those who are not educated in advacned braking texhniques, such as threshold braking. Infact other techniques such as threshold braking will bring any vehicle to a complete stop in a shorter distance than ABS ever can.

When I say bad drivers, most ordinary drivers freak out and apply the brakes as hard as they can thinking that this will bring there vehicle to a safer and shorter stop, though in reality the braking distance is significantly increased. Tyres that are locked up create intese friction between the tyre and the road surfce, which makes the tyres slippary and slide accross the road surface. ABS helps prevent this by preventing and detecting a locked wheel and allowing it to continue its rotation and maintian adequate traction with the road, so that you can 1) maintian your steering and potentially avoid the colliison, and 2) stop in a much shorter distance than locking your wheels.

We all freak out and will lock our wheels at some stage. It is then important to recognise that you are now beyond the vehicles braking capabilities and must infact release the pressure on the brake peddel, which is very hard to do when your about to run into something or someone.

SPOT ON MATE!!!!

My car has abs and the amount of times it has failed on me is beyond a joke!

Yeah thanks, going alright - just glad my passenger and I are both fine. Was a tight left hander, much tighter than appears on the photo and as mentioned the rear end kept going until I was completely perpendicular to the road, and then it took a huge correction to avoid going off the left side of the road and into Port Phillip Bay, and the the subsequent flick back and I collected the embankment.

Running the standard rims and and same tyres as standard I believe. Funny I checked the tread/inflation regularly but never double checked the brand/make - not as interested as I should've been I guess.
