I'm 25 and I've only needed ABS once. I did something stupid in my previous car (EL Ghia V8) and the ABS helped stop me millimetres from a gutter. No damage done, but lesson learnt. I have much more respect for the T and hopefully I'll never need the ABS to kick in with this car.

The size of your brakes will not make any difference in a one stop situation.

All the pads need to do is grab the rotor and stop it from spinning, all modern brake systems out there are capable of doing this.

The only difference bigger brakes will make is that you'll be able to do it over and over again without fading the brakes.

The biggest factor in situations like this are your tyres. I don't care how much sh*t I cop for buying great tyres and keeping small diametre rims (17" 18") so I can afford the great tyres, if they save me and my family from a stupid mistake I made, or allow me to swerve to miss someone elses stupid mistake they have just paid for themselves.

Big heavy high power cars like the XR6T need great tyres, not second rate tyres.

I completely agree ... Nothing more dangerous than high powered car running large rims with cheap tyres.

If you have not felt ABS ... then try it. Best to do this in the wet at low speeds with a bit of space.

Even better, go and do an advanced driving course, it could save you and your passenges lives, particularly if you are heavy on the right foot !!

not going to go through insurance to get this fixed. prolly cost the same as the excess.

I do have a few question though.

1. If you stand on the brakes, does the ABS kick in?

2. If you are sideways, does ABS work?

Cheers

ABS should work, no matter what, unless you were sideways enough so the wheels were not really spinning anyway.

By the way, you were lucky, you should see mine, similar sort of scenario, hit a curb then a power poll but with MUCH more force. just received a call from the insurance company, a bit under $10k of gamages

And im another. Few weeks ago some kids ran across the road infront of me. I swerved them hit the curb on my right front wheel. spun around almost 180 and my left front and rear tyres hit the curb dead flat then I bounced up the curb and hit a small tree just infront of the rear tyre on the side skirt. called the car place today. Bloody $9500. Side skirt. window. Back left wheel. Front and rear suspension was absolutely rooted. Plus its gonna cost them more because they didnt know I had the paint protection and window protection stuff on. Should be ready end of this week *fingers crossed*

When I first crashed it didnt look that bad aye. But after its been checked out you can see what happens underneath the car.. I was hopefully looking at doing under 1k damage. Now its 10 x that amount. Luckily its only $600 excess. So aint that bad.

Everybody ive been talking to says I just should have hit the little pricks cause apparently they have been doing it on purpose in that particular area. Also they have been throwing rocks and passing cars and laying starpickets on the rail road tracks so it mess's with the boom gates. I just cant understand what goes through these kids heads when they are playing chicken with a car.. makes me sad and now I have to pay this small amount. But its still an amount for something not my fault. but what can ya do.

really disappointing hey.. if you hit one of those kids. you probably would have been labelled as hoon or dangerous driver. they parents would have went on shows like today tonight and ACA and claim there is a speeding issue along that stretch of road.. so on an so forth.

the kids these days have absolutely no fkn idea what they are dealing with. some aborginal kids got run over by a train in ipswich(qld) becuase they we playing on the railway tracks.. now that's deadset stupid.. and then the parents go on TV and blame QR for not making sure the fences were properly secured... its a rort...

on another note... when I crashed my car.. from the outside it looked like maybe 2k damage... but then when I got the quote it ended up being $4500... steering components are REALLY expensive...

my 2c

By far the most cruical component of any vehicle is its tyres. Though others might say the braking system, however its usless without tyres. Too many ppl go and buy cheap no name tyres or even re-treads. Some even drive on there rubber till the canvess and steel belt is popping through and then they get a blowout.

When me standard dunlops ware out, they will be replaced with dunlops or mayvbe bridgestone, but not with anything ive never heard of, no matter what the price.

We take these vital pieces of rubber for granted every day, cause we rarely require there full potential. But one day we all desperately rely on them in one way or another.

Sorry to hear. Ive got a modded sedan but in the wet on an inclined roundabout ive learnt never to use boost, even with tc on after a few near panel death experiences. The rear end on the sedans is very stable I beleive but once the big ship does let go and step out its doesnt want to pull up.

someone learnt this the hard way just a few hours ago....not sure of the extent of the damage yet, but I am guessing it will be a decent amount. Wasn't speeding, on a dry but windy road, went over this running water and lost traction and sideways into an embankment...on closer inspection the water was more substancial than I thought.

Obvious message here is be careful. I consider myself a safe driver, but tonight I learnt that the scenario can take the situation out of your control very quickly. I also learnt that a big heavy BA turbo is a hard car to catch when it becomes loose (well for me it was anyway)
