Went and had a look at a AWD and RWD territory and a 3L Subaru Outback today. Initially I was thinking of trying to sell the T privately and buying no trade but thought I might as well get a trade in price while I'm at it.O5 BA Mkii XR6T10800kmspremium soundtow bar mats, spats, protectors and the usual crap, in mint condition. After hearing all the stories about the re sale of the T's my expectations weren't high but I came away pleasantly surprised. One ford dealer offered me 27 on a terri with $3,800 of the RRP of the terri and I'm waiting to hear from a second ford dealer. The subaru dealer offered me 29 on a outback with $2500 off the RRP of the outback.Basically I'm now wondering what it's worth privately. Say I went for the outback I would need to sell it for 30 to make it worth the trouble. Any one sold one recently think 30 would be obtainable on the private market or should I just trade it? His price is very reasonable but hes not in a hurry to sell it so he wont give it for cheap. If you really want to get rid of it then I reckon you should trade it in if you can get a reasonable deal. It could be a long, hard slog to get only $1-2k more privately. Chuck an add on Carsales and see what happens.....

You can always trade it in and with the delay between picking up the new vehicle you can try and sell privately. Its a clause that most dealers will allow you to do. If you cant sell it then they will take you car off you for the agreed trade in price. The trade in price you have sounds reasonable, but depressing with those k's. Win/win.

Got quotes from 2 ford dealers on terri's and both offered me 27 for my car, Subaru 29 on a outback and Dodge 28.5 on a Nirto. It's a bit depressing when 2 ford dealers offer you less for your car than opposition brands. Overall experience was very different at the subaru and dodge dealers compared to ford. My local ford dealers were no drama, went and told them what I wanted got the price no bullsh*t or carry on. Ford dealer number 2 was a much bigger dealership and they tried all the usually tricks, the salesman really tried to put the pressure on telling me how his wife has a terri and loves it blah blah blah, then after seeing the outback brochure on the front seat of my car admitted when his boss was out of earshot the his wife actually drives a forester what a wa*ker. Probably my favorite ploy was when we was doing the quote he acted like he was having problem with his computer then after a while gets on the phone to his boss saying he needs him to come down because the computer system was saying he couldn't issue the quote without his supervisors approval as it was bellow their cost. Gotta give the guy points for trying though, but in the end they were comprehensively beaten by my local dealer anyway. I was accompanied both times when I test drove both terri versions.Subaru didn't have a H6 spec outback for me to drive so within 2 hours they had organised a customers car for me to drive. The guy came with me seeing as it was a customers car which is fair enough. Didn't seem to know a hell of alot about the car but he was a nice guy, didn't try and give me the pressure sell. When I told him about aspects of the outback I wasn't wrapped with in comparison to other brands he didn't rubbish the other cars I was talking about (unlike ford dealer number 2) but just tried to talk up the positive aspects of the outback. When it came to getting a price it was very different to what I'm normally used to it was pretty much well this is the RRP and this is what we can do it for, and this is what we will give you for your car. Take it or leave it. While initially I though this was a bit odd but no doubt it's this type of pricing that is part of the reason ford and Holden's re sale is in the toilet while Subaru is not.Dodge were very similar to Subaru, let me take both cars for a test drive by myself and once again the salesman was not overly knowledgeable but a nice guy and never put any pressure on. They went even one step up further than than Subaru with the price, not even giving me a written quote saying it was against company policy. All I walked away with was a total figure for change over and an no trade price, they guy even went as far as saying that I just need to decide if the car suits me, the timing suits me and the price suits me.4 different dealers and 4 very different experiences, maybe ford should take a leaf form Subaru and doge and instead of letting dealers compete with each other and trashing re sale in the process Edited 01/07/07 07:35 AM by JBomb3000

When I was looking at buying my Turbo, Knox Ford would only let me test drive one if I was going to buy it.When the missus was 21yo and was looking at buying a brand new Subaru Liberty they gave us the keys and said bring it back before we close. As we jumped in the car and was leaving the guy came over and asked for one of our licences as he had forgot to get our info.Customer service is a big thing when buying cars from dealers but some places just dont seem to care.So JBomb3000, what have you decided to get??? I was shopping for Terri at the time and made it clear I wasnt interested unless I could sample one under my normal driving conditions which is a 90% country road commute, and be able to show the missus (live 50kms from the dealer). Also drove a Focus and a Fiesta under the same conditions, same dealer. No pressure at all.Ended up buying a TS for my wife instead of me But the XR6T loaner was a mistake...it was a luxury pack and as I loved it. Couldnt afford a optioned newie so bought a second hand BA with it...so in their good deed they lost that sale. Some good some bad....On topic, Id do the trade. Wayyy less pain than the current market from all reports. Love that colour Edited 01/07/07 08:21 AM by PepeLePew

Some points to note:- Ford will usually discount a fair bit of RRP- Subaru generally doesn't discount their cars- Use demonstrators to get a good price on a new car (most dealers will match an opposition dealers demo price on a new)My recent experiences ( I change cars ALOT!):08/2006 Bought a new Territory - new $37,990 RWD TX, Cruise, 7 seats (RRP $43,500)01/2007 Bought a XR6T - demo $39,500, Auto, Mats (RRP was $46,000)Getting rid of the old ones:2004 BMW 318i on the Terri - was offered $23,500 trade on a new Nissan Murano - bought the Terri and sold the BMW privately for a lot more (stuff you Mr Nissan)2006 Terri on the XR6T - was offered "under $30,000" trade on the XR6T - bought the XR6T and sold the Terri privatelyIn my case, I sold the BMW for well over $10K more, but the trade in offered at Nissan was BS (I guess they didn't want the car - only had 50,000 klm's on it too). The Terri I also sold for well above the $30K offered (not really an offer, I just asked and they suggested I sell privately as they wouldn't be over $30K). NEGOTIATE THE PRICE OF THE NEW CAR WITH NO TRADE FIRST, and then introduce the trade - that way you really know what you are being offered on the trade. I pay cash for all my cars, so I guess that helps. Bought the XR6T and still had the Terri at home in the garage - but I knew the Terri would sell so I took the punt. I did wait until I had an offer on the BMW before I bought the Terri - the BMW I wasn't so confident with an easy sale.In your case, $27K sounds pretty good given the age (2005). The klm's are very low, but the age will hold it back in the trade stakes. BUT, there may be a couple of grand in the new car with NO trade, which means you're not really getting $27k for yours.Best of luck.Dan Edited 01/07/07 08:30 AM by gu4800

I reckon you'd have a hard time finding a private buyer at much over $25.In the case of the new cars the dealers have about $6k to play with so if they give you a $3k discount they can also bump your trade up by $3k - makes it all look good to you - and it isn't all that bad in fact, so I'd say do the deal and don't waste your money trying to advertise it and sell privately. It comes back to how much time do you have? It might take three months to get a private buyer above the money you've been offered, if at all.
