The old XR4 that you remember was a Sierra XR4i - it was a 6 cylinder 2.8 litre, 2 door, 2 wheel drive Sierra with two wings. So... I am not sure where the 4 came into the equation!

The 4 was from the XR4Ti (North American variant of the Sierra) which was turbocharged. More info on the Wikipedia entry.

Its a turbo. Its been out for a while in the UK as the Fiesta ST. My partners Uncle's wife got one. He reckons its more fun than the GTI golf

The XR4 sierra was sold in the U.k in the early eighties with a 2.8 V6 , latter updated to the 2.9 injected V6 . A four wheel drive version was also sold badged as the XR4x4 I in the late eighties with the 2.9 V6 and also the 2 litre dohc engine ( sh*t).

The V6 4x4 had a great following after turbo technics developed a twin turbo conversion , a great alternative to the cosworth.

The XR2 was the peformance Fiesta.

The XR3 was the escort based version.

I take it this model is equall to our Fiesta st wich has a 2 litre n/a duratec motor.

Sorry to disapoint you it's fitted with a naturally aspirated 2.0 litre.

Yeah I thought it was only a lil N/A motor, hardly worth the XR title.

110kw in a car that's a good few 100kg lighter than a Focus... I reckon that equates to pretty good performance, worthy of the XR name plate IMO. All Ford have done is rebadge the Focus and Fiesta ST's as XR5 and XR4 respecitively. This still leaves scope for future models ti be released and then rebadged under the FPV umbrella.

I think the XR4 will help build a more youthful image for ford in the small car segment. They have a red one with white stripes at my local dealership and they said that with the exception of one person who though it looked like a rally car everyone who has looked at it (even just in passing) has commented favorably about it. Weather it drives like a genuine hot hatch remains to be seen but it certainly looks the part.
