Reveal secrets or be caught in the net

EMPLOYERS are trawling through popular websites such as Google and MySpace to check the backgrounds of candidates applying for jobs.

And they are uncovering plenty of incriminating details, some using their findings to determine whether the candidate gets the job.

One job seeker was knocked back for a finance sector job recently after an employer typed their name into Google and uncovered a serious drug-related conviction and jail sentence. Not surprisingly, the conviction was not included on the candidate's resume.

"We did some background checking and . . . they hadn't disclosed [that] they had been imprisoned and had a reasonably serious offence registered against their name," Andrew Vaughan, executive recruitment manager at Talent2 said.

In another case, a candidate was knocked back after a recruiter took a dislike to the marijuana-leaf wallpaper design on her web page.
