So anyway I was bored on the weekend so I thought I'd much around with my car for a little..,anyway I ended up playing with the BOV, seeing if I could make it louder, I ended up disconnecting the BOV from the back and blocking it up with a deck chair plug thingy.

Coming off boost it makes a really big 'WOOSH' noise now, (rice burner style) which I'm liking, but I'm worried that this setup might not be good for the car, for instance one thing I've noticed is that my car is coming on boost even later then it was before (generic tunes are great haha..)

Could anyone shed a little bit of light on this for me?

Hah I was also bored today and modified my BOV again today. I opened up the Monza filter and put something inside it to restrict the air a bit so it comes out of a smaller hole - in an attempt to make it a bit more louder.

After an hour of mucking around it hasnt really made much of a difference, however it does seem to make a bit louder dosing sound (tu tu tu tu).

Is this because I have restricted the escaping air too much, and now its causing the air to become blocked and travel backwards (causing the dosing a bit more louder) ?

If that's the case, I dont want to be damaging the turbo for a little bit more sound and I'll put it back to how it was before.

Cheers.

on my 10 psi the BOV does nothing then!

its just gobble gobble... iv got a boost gauge hooked up to the vacuum line.. could that have something to do with it not opening properly?

Even the slightest form of acceleration, soon as I back off I get the 'psssshhhhttttt' noise haha

when I give it some and back off 'PSSSSSSSSSSHHHHTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT"

It's not legal is it..

Yellow sticker here I come

yeah 10psi wont help that!!! vacuum line wont/should not affect it. Even a K&N alone will get you a bit more gobble as the gobble is air leaving the filter itself.

Yeah that's because of the bov design. the factory bosch valve is reverse vented and therefore vacuum operated only...so if you take it off and have a look inside you will notice the piston seals in a way that as soon as there is vacuum it's venting (either atmo or back into the intake, depending on set-up). Therefore you will hear noise (if atmo vented) even on low/moderate throttle. It also means it's suking in unfiltered air when cruising or at idle :(

This is the main difference in the kompact (turbosmart) design. This valve is a dual port so vents to both atmo and intake (hose and trumpet). The intake venting hole on one side of the valve is slightly lower than the atmo venting hole on the other. That way at idle the vacuum is not strong enough to open the piston to expose the atmo hole and will only open enough to suck air from the intake hole.

Depending on the top screw adjustment (spring tention) you can set the kompact valve up so the piston is compressed by boost and drawn up by vacuum enough to expose the atmo hole at reasonable or a fair bit of throttle. This is how I have mine adjusted so when cruising around and only driving on low boost you can't hear the valve, but when you feed boost on you can hear it and at WOT is scares the $hit out of the old ladies at the local retirement village bus stop... or the pesky bike riders (pri(ks don't have any respect for ya when you're on a 11yr old mountain bike doing 200m long wheelies!!!...it's my form of revenge). I can always take you for a drive if ya want!!!

My recommendation for you would to have the car tuned to the safe limits of the stock cooler, and then when you have saved for all the other bits and pieces (including a decent cooler), change the inlet piping.... check out RAPID's car. Then either don't run a bov or by a generic turbosmart one. I have the known wog cooler (the wog has 6 different coolers remember) and will probably take it out as well as the kompact valve in order to change the inlet piping to something similar to RAPID's!!! Just got to save the pennies for my twinplate clutch first :(

yeah as soon as it starts turkey gobbling the bov isn't doing it's job properly.

Ok then so would you recommend me opening up the BOV filter again and removing the restrictor plate I put in there - so it can flow more freely again?

I know that dosing (gobble gobble) technically is bad for the turbo (even though many people have been running their xr6t's like this for a long time now without damage).

I'm gonna just put it back to the way it was, the noise is starting to piss me off now

I want to just take the BOV off completely but my mate keeps telling me it's dangerous, soon as I get the bigger cooler, the piping is all gonna change.. I hope..
