Water/methanol Injection

PAH, mate all kits these days are on the boost side of the intake that's why the pumps are high pressure to atomise the water for one and so there are no problems with any boost level. The old diy setups basically used washer bottle motors and sprayed a stream of water more than misting it. My CAPA vortech supercharger kit I had back in 03 had the dodgy setup and even with the fins on linear blower spinning at speeds allot slower than any turbo managed to cause corrosion to some extent.

I think Methanol (Methyl Alcohol?) and Methylated Spirits (95% Ethanol?) are different but could be wrong?

I can get a 20lt drum of Methanol for $44 in Townsville so I'd expect it to be cheaper down south!

If I ever fit my snow perf kit I'll try nitro with it as I still have a heap of fuels and oils left over from my RC days...

I answered my own question! They are indeed different. Metho you can drink (ethanol) whereas Methanol you will die... haha

I still could be wrong though as I just sniffed them both and while the metho smelt inviting (with OJ) the methanol near knocked me out!

A small BP but I'd say they just get it from the main depot near town. I'd say you won't have a problem getting it as where there's a drag strip there is always methanol!

Guys,

Yeah thanks for the heads-up re high pressure injection downstream of the turbo. Top idea. What triggers the injection with these modern kits? The upstream system I used in 1980 was triggered by a manifold pressure sensor so it was either off or on.

What I'd hope to achieve by fitting a kit. Protection against ping if the fuel I use is a bit dodgy and reduce power drop-off in hot weather. My current thinking is to fit a kit to the car WITHOUT a retune. If I run out of water-alcohol, the car is still safe to drive. I am looking for comments here. Sound like a reasonable plan?

I visited the Snow Methanol Injection page on Ebay. They have a lot of kits. Can somebody recommend a Kit No: for the XR6T? If there's a better brand, please let me know.

A bit of trivia on the metho vs methanol issue. I ran my 1980's system with 100% water. It was there to stop ping. As the nozzle was upstream of an SU carby, the SU would turn the spray into ice-blocks. The metho was supposed to prevent ice blocks blocking up the SU. I shifted the nozzle downstream of the carby and ahead of the turbo to overcome ice blockages in the SU. That required a solenoid to prevent a closed throttle sucking the windscreen washer bottle dry. Has anybody tried one of these kits with 100% water? I am tempted to do so and again I am looking for feedback. If some form of alcohol is required, I'll duck around to Bunnings for their 20L drum of metho. Yes I do have a lemon tree and no I won't be mixing it in ;-)

Either a basic adjustable Hobbs switch or there are smart controllers mate but TBH unless your budget is big or you have top end gear and built engine I wouldn't bother with the smart controller for the price!

I'm in the process of replying to you also PAH but I suppose I'll put it all here... lol

I got a few Snow Perf kits (stage 2 with MAP) from Snow on Ebay but there seems to be an Aus seller now but I'll go back through my Ebay history and find a price delivered!

Give me a little while though as my bro want's projector info (NOW) also!!!

I canned the PM reply to you mate so am putting it here for everyone to see.

I can't find Snow Perf store on Ebay anymore? I bought two of the kit's at the time and it was $363.60AU delivered each but that was with the USD at $0.962583 and Snow had an offer amount so I offered an easy $100US off from memory and they accepted it... Delivery was $160US for the two kit's that's why I low balled them!

Kit's were- Stage 1 (20001). This looks the same except the tank is black- http://www.snowperformance.net/stage-1-boost-cooler.html

This seems the cheapest from ebay- WAREHOUSE DIRECT but there is also stage 2 here- ENGINE MASTER AUS but I'd be contacting them as their information is conflicting!

My father inlaw made mine (alloy for a mate and stainless for my intake) but you will also need either an alloy bung for the nozzle- http://www.snowperformance.net/nozzle-mounting-bung.html

Can't think of anything else except if the tank is higher (or in the boot) then a solenoid is required so you aren't drip feeding the intake.

Hi Guys,

I emailed Snow Performance yesterday asking them to recommend a kit to provide a bit of extra protection NOT to chase extra power with a retune. They replied recommending their Kit No. #20010. They also advised me to contact Rocket Industries. As stated, I told them that my objective is to add protection to an already safe tune and maybe help the intercooler. Here's an extract from their email:

"We do have a kit that will reference manifold pressure. This will be the #20010 kit. We recommend injecting post turbo just before the throttle body. This will keep the nozzle from experiencing manifold vacuum therefore, no need for a solenoid. At your current level, it seems that you will just need 100% water for injection. This will raise octane points by 8 over what's in the fuel tank."

That sounds encouraging to me although I think I'd fit the solenoid just in case I have to fit the water bottle higher than the nozzle. And I wouldn't use it to drop back to 95 RON, just to help the 98 RON.

I just checked the Rocket web page. Can't see anything with a 20010 PN but they have an RPSP20011 Snow Water Injection kit.

Any thoughts?
