Iam trying to find out what gearbox options are available to replace the plastic T5.

Has and one fitted anything other than a T56.

I have had a quote for a Tremac TKO, and dellows does a bellhousing to suit.

If I go this way I would like to know if anyone has done this already and can tell me everything involved and needed to fit.

This is still only a 5 speed but I feel the there is no need to use a 6 speed that has 2 overdrives, different story if it had 1 overdrive gear though.

I think it is a stronger box as well than the T56.

Then there's the gmh version of the T56 which is a fraction of the cost of the Ford version.

I know the Ford version is more refined but I have been told the imput shaft on the gmh box is stronger than Ford box due to having finer spline.

The other thing I have heard from a person who works with Drive for life said that they break the T56 inputs as easy as the T5 and sometimes they may only get 1/2 a day use out of a new box.

He also told me how the gmh box doesn't break imput shafts like the Ford box.

He even said that they where even cryogenically strengthening them and still breaking them.

that's about as much as I know and would like to be able to find a good replacement for my T5 ASAP,

If anyone can help out please contact me.

All suggestions please.

The T56 is your best option... I have been were you and explored all other manual options ... The T56 is the easiest and most straight forward way ...

whats cryogenically strengthening????????????? Sounds like a load of BS to me....

Everything I've heard points to the gmh box to be the sh*tty version...

You would be better off talkin to malwoods as they are the gurus on all tremec stuff...

Don't agree. T56 boxes are far stronger.

Drive a T5 and T56 and feel the difference. Look at the size of the gearsets; massive difference.

I bent a T5 input shaft back in 2003 with 340rwkw (almost immediately after the power upgrade)

Mal Wood supplied a T56 for me early 2004, and still supplies a stronger version than the Ford T56, with stronger input shaft.

However, there are guys running around with 500rwkw using the factory T56 without problems with input shafts or gearsets.

Many guys have faced this T5 issue; I think a couple have got stronger gearsets, most have upgraded to T56, others sell their cars, trading to a model with the T56.

The T56 is a 7-10K upgrade, depending on clutch option used.

There are 2nd hand T56's available, or maybe a refurbished unit from Mal Wood.

There is an enormous amount of information in this sub-forum; do some research.

So T56's are 6spd and the same box as in the XR8's?
