Xf Turbo Dyno Results

Nice job mate. I'm toying with the idea of getting rid of the top mount intercooler on mine and putting a front mount like you've done. Can you tell me what size and make your intercooler is and what flow/power it is rated to? Also, I can't see very clearly from the pics but does it have clean supply of air to it ??? ... it does look like it is shrouded a bit by the bumper.

I think its like 650mm x 450mm, 3" outlets. Its just a generic brand bar and plate from eBay. Good cooler though, its a good size. Would be much more usefull on something over 10psi ( I've taken it off my car and running no cooler). It was a bit blocked by the bumper but I was going for a sleeper look so I didnt want to chop the bumper to much.

Thanks for the info ... when my ute rebuild is finished the motor will then be running straight LPG (dual fuel at present in the ZL) and so I'll be upping the boost to about 15psi. Which is why I was leaning towards a front mount. But unless it is going to get clean airflow which is hard to achieve with an XF/ZL/FE front end I might as well stick with the top mount. However I do have a backup plan with a fan-forced setup on the topmount which will give the desired results I hope. Unfortuanately that will be the end of the sleeper look for me too as there will be a bonnet scoop fitted by necessity. It probably doesn't matter much nowadays anyhow as every second car has a bonnet scoop don't they? But I did enjoy the stealth look of the very standard looking ZL that would blow the doors off almost anything up to a worked 351.

A top mount intercooler is such a crude setup you would be better off without one or at least a FMIC. When your sitting at the lights or even low speeds the intercooler soaks up massive amounts of heat from the engine, and once you've got that heat into the cooler/end tanks/piping its very hard for the air entering through a scoop to cool this down to provide any benefit. That is why overyone gets rid of top mounts (such as WRX) and go for FMIC. All turbo drag cars go for FMIC and they are runing like 30psi +. So I would really not recommend you go for a top mount, especially if you going to run something like 15psi. What about mounting a small cooler in the wheel arch with a protector from the tyre side and a duct from the front bumper to provide cool air. At least it will not be soaking up engine bay temps. Anyway food for thought.

Yes, they are crude. But only 'cos they are "old" technology. They are still better than nothing believe me. My car would only run about 12 psi without it. When it was first built (about 8 years ago) the motor was running 20 psi for a while - just while I was "tuning" it and getting all the computers set up properly. After I got it sorted to my satisfaction I then pulled the boost right out of it for longevity of the motor. I figure that as it was built to take 20 psi then at 12 psi it should last a good while without any problems. So far so good.

I don't have a problem with heat soak - there is full time high capacity fan forced ducting for the engine compartment out through the inner guard. No bonnet scoops, no bonnet vents ... pure stealth!

I had a look for some pics but don't have any on my current 'puter system that I can find. I'll post a couple up tomorrow.

Righto here's a few fresh pics just taken ... pic 3 shows the air outlet under the guard ... and 4 four is showing the hole already in the engine bay of the ute which has been completely stripped and is now on it's way back together again.

nice but you guys need some shine... this is a customers (now good friend!) xf, hes only just finished it and still needs the final polish/ clean up now that its all back together.

custom pistons, offset ground crank, custom cam, ported head etc etc, basically the same engine as (MR.0250), turbo is a T66 with a turbosmart 48mm external gate, auto built by paul @ keas, diff is borg warner with 3.23:1, romac full spool, moser 31 spline axles,

I saw it last friday, and let me tell you it has to be seen. bloody fantastic is how I would describe it. im not a fan of xf's ( I think there foul ugly things, along with xc, and xe's (I drove an xc as a daily for 3 years and have a xe esp)), but I asked george if he would drive me around on my wedding day........ that's how good it is.
