Turbo Blades Failure

Taking off at the traffic lights and giving it a little squirt, I noticed this odd hissing sound, much like a super charger (very loud). There was no abnormal effects to the driving of the car as far as power, transmission changes etc. It was just the loud sound. Almost like a pipe had come off some where.

By speaking to a few people about the problem, I was told "maybe it's your transmission"? Maybe it's the turbo? or could even be a loose exhaust?

This morning my hubby "Brian" first checked the turbo by taking the intake pipe off and examining the blades. He then came in & told me to have a look at this.

This is what we found

The flat top of the blade looks abnormal.

My car is just out of warranty :bum:

Now we are looking out for a new turbo fan or kit. Where? How Much?

Cheers,

Aly

That's farked!

It will need more than just a turbo. The broken off bits go somewhere and that's into your intercooler and hopefully for you not any further.

Faaark that sucks Aly, hope someone can supply a cheap replacement for you, but as stated you'll need to find where the little bits have gone, out of curiosity are you running a BOV or any other intake mods?

Ive seen this pop up a few times now on here.

I wonder what the cause is?

Ive seen this quite a few times on other vehicles, usually a result of something striking the comp wheel, perhaps dirt or debris, usually due to poorly filtered intake air...

That sucks, hope you get it sorted soon. Going by your sig though I don't think that it really matters that your car was just out of warranty.

If you look closely you can see where the wheel has rubbed the housing, there is some axial float present. Roller bearing turbos have very little float unlike plain bearing/ bush turbos.. Looks like there is something major up with that turbo. Its all fixable... new comp wheels... housings etc.. just depends on your budget and also intended further use... May be an opportunity to upgrade.. Lets look on the bright side.. :-) Mal

Some thing quite hard had gone through that. Do you have the standard ford crossover? I've seen the black paint flake off them a couple of times and do similar damage. A new comp wheel and housing shouldn't cost much more than about $250. Might as well do bearing and get it all balanced at the same time. Your probably up for around a grand all up. You'll need to remove the entire intake system and clean it all out. Don't forget to do the pipe work between the filter and the turbo. Alot of debris gets thrown back up there and its often over looked when the system is cleaned and can cause the same damage all over again.

Make sure you haven't got any holes in you air filter. Also check your air box for sand. When i had the factory ford airbox it would fill up with and amazing amount of sand and dead bugs.....
