hi all,

I just bought a ba 2002 xr6turbo and have discovered a thumping noise comeing from the diff? this occours only when changeing through the gears and have since taken it back to 2 different ford dealer workshops and they say there's nothing wrong and that this noise is normal..I dont think this is normal and I think they are just pissing in my poket trying to save a buck from repairing it ..

any ideas or thoughts would be welcome..I'mtakeing it to pedders this week to see what they say b4 I go back to ford with extra possiable causes.

thanks for all help...regards jeff

It comes standard mate, It's out of warranty so they are actually saving you some cash!

There are guy's on here that have had upto 10 diffs put in and still have a clunk, most now drive around it now.....

thanks chooka, its still under stat warranty and it came with a extended 3 year factory warranty as well is this thumping noise just the backlash?

If it's still under a warranty I would make them replace it, won't cure the problem but will subside a little for a while.

Not entirely sure exactly the cause but you would presume backlash or general slack in the drive train.

its the standard backlash mate.. I have found the best way to reduce it is ride the clutch a little, keeping a little pressure on the gas pedal on changes also helps. with time you'll learn to drive around it.

if you have a hunt throught the mal woods section he has written a few threads on what is the actual problem.

I too had a thumping noise coming from the diff area, sounded like real bad axle tramp to me. Only happened when it lost traction, uaually in the wet and then not always.

Took the Service Manager for a drive one rainy day and he said it's just the diff hitting the bump stops. It sounded like someone bashing the rear floor with a sledge hammer, but sounded like a machine gun.

Just as a coincedence they've just had to replace my rear centre bush at 30,000km. I still don't know if that was what was causing the noise was as I don't thrash it enough to have it happen very often.

I had the bushes replaced in my diff and never had a problem after that. Get them to do that under warranty and see if it helps :roflmbo:

good to hear you got it sorted without a rebuild mate!!
