Sorry. I was writing under the kiwi's login. He's waiting for a black XR6T.

In theory you could attach any device that has an NTSC RGB interface to the TFT screen. If you have a navi system already you could make a simple interface box that allows you to switch between inputs. The input could be a video camera, DVD player, or any other device that delivers a RBG output.

Stay away from the CAN bus. It is an industry standard high speed messaging bus and there's two years of engineering in getting all modules to work together. Messages are sent by one, received by many. You could in theory reverse engineer the message structure but unless you know what message blocks are free, you should never add any messages to the bus. Things will go wrong and the engine control module, ABS, ICC, cluster, and body computer will possibly fall over.

Interesting that you say unix geek...what would you use unix for in the car? What do you mean mp3 in the boot?

heheheh...

Well, a mate of mine has a full VCD/DVD/MP3 system built into his boot, complete with 120GB hard drive and a laptop-size DVD drive...

He hooks it up to an LCD TV monitor hidden under a blank console plate, uses a remote control to access everything.

Wasn't really thinking too much about hacking around with the CAN - as you say, too much can go wrong. I'd be pretty dubious about trusting a 100% computer-controlled system in the car.

Imagine the fun you could have...

They're starting to have computers be able to connect remotely to data services (ie via GPRS, GSM, even bluetooth and 802.11 have been trialled) - if it's connected, it's accessible or compromisable in some way.

Tapping in and listening to diagnostics of the WHOLE CAR would be great. Hence why I wanted to know if there was a read-only diagnostics port.

As for the RGB inputs - I'm not clear on one point - is that the same screen as on the premium sound?

ie, I have got Premium sound in my XR6T, but not sat-nav.

Can I, therefore, plug something into an RGB input on the LCD and have it display?

Thinking of laptop, plug in and jive away... a 15 hour drive suddenly isn't enough to play all my songs... :)

Oh... and one other thing...

What's Linux? :geek:

The diagnostics are read only through the diagnostics connector next to the fuses - right knee under the pull off panel but you need a $7000 CAN card to watch the messages. Sorry.

Skip the laptop - try an iPod with the audio auxiliary adapter cable. Connection is behind the fuse box and uses the mobile phone input for the speakers. It has a 3.5mm jack with auto mute for radio. Let me know if you try it and if you like it. I'm not sure that they couldn't have done a better job integrating the jack in the ICC surface...

Premium has a 5.8 LCD segment screen not TFT. You don't have RGB inputs unless you have the Nav colour screen. I don't know if they will offer the screen as an upgrade to the existing field units - the cost is pretty high I hear. And you will void warranty if you so much as loosen a screw on the screen or audio.

I have a Mac. GSM, GPRS, Bluetooth and 802.11 are not new techs. What use would they be in the car, though. Fun but much use???

I haven't told you about my car...

XR6T Man, Premium Sound, Sat Nav, Leather, Sunroof, Audio Auxiliary, all in Acid Rush with 18" alloys. Is that bad? It looks very bad.java script:emoticon(':geek:')

$7000 CAN card? not a chance...

Oh well... If it's an OBD2 (On-Board-Diagnostics v2) connector like I think it is, I've got the adapter and software for it anyway... *grin*

bummer about the RGB - if I'd known that before... I would have shelled out the extra for the sat-nav.

*shrugs*

Your car sounds sweet.... or bad, or whatever you want it to be... hehehe...

Monday I will have my baby!

BMW have been testing GSM to enable the car to contact the dealer when there's an issue or is approaching service interval... Then a message or telephone call comes to the person saying "Good morning Mr Richdude. Your car is coming up for its service in 372 km. When is a good time for you to make it available? We can pick up and return if required..."

Or the GPRS for weather and traffic reports...

Or the bluetooth integration being trialled to allow diagnostics with no wires at the service dept...

Personally, scares the bejeebers outta me... :)
