Ba Turbo Conversion

Im looking for some info on a BA N/A 6 to turbo conversion? :spit:

I presume you could use a 2nd hand XR6T exhaust manifold, a nice sized Garrett, a generic 600x300 intercooler and run custom piping.

Is the PCM the same (tunability) between NA and turbos?

Could you flash a tune into a N/A PCM and just use an aftermarket EBC?

- Auto gearboxes the same?

- Diffs the same?

- Compression ratio? (different I presume)

Can anyone link me to internal differences between the engines?

Just valve springs required?

Might be making a lovely little drag project :blush:

Can you tell Im used to things with 8 cylinders? :blush:

Let me start be saying that I'm sure it can be done, but to answer your questions:

The PCM is not the same, n/a does not have boost control ability

Auto gearbox is stronger in a Turbo

Diffs are not the same, lsd and stronger in a Turbo

Compression ratio is lower in a Turbo

Internally the engine is quite a bit different as well, as it has a floating little end on the conrods, different pistons and Inconel exhaust valves, ensuring that they do ot distort or melt under load.

The N/A and the 'T' may look the same, but technically there is a big difference between the two cars.

If you use an NA ecu and aftermarket boost controller is the NA ECU plus a capa edit going to be as effective as the turbo ECU?

Can it still drive large injectors? Alter timing and stuff just as well?

There will be no communication between the boost controller and the PCM, which means your ignition and fuel maps can't compensate for boost.

Ignition and fuel can be edited in a N/A, also for larger injectors, but if a conversion is going to be done, I would get a Turbo PCM, loom and all the other bits.

Yep - Not worth the effort (where have I heard that before :spoton: )

Seriously, it will be a major undertaking, involving both hardware and software changes if you want a true 'T'.

Why do they need to communicate if the ignition and fuel maps are adjustable? Cant you tune against load rather than what the boost controller is doing? How do all the eboost conversions work?

Doesnt the map sensor let the ecu know what is going on?

If you are keen on selling the turbo gear I think I know a prospective buyer.
