Ford Pursuit ute

RRP: $54,850. As tested $56,700 (extras: leather seats, $1850).

Why we're driving it: Intrigued by the Ford hype that this is a GT Falcon in everything but name. And looking for the reasons why utes are in vogue among more than just the traditional artisans.

Likes: Sports car handling with a cavernous cargo area. Effortless performance from that Ford Performance Vehicles Boss 5.4-litre V8 (290kW/520Nm). Pulls like a buffalo from 1100rpm. Wild styling appeals to anyone under 30, and some over 40. Smart and contemporary interior. Lockable colour-coded hard plastic tonneau.

Dislikes: When unladen, the ride is a little jiggly in the tail, could be due to leaf-sprung rear. Fuel use is alarming when the accelerator is used with enthusiasm. Not sure the big rear wing is necessary.

Would I buy one? Not unless I move suburbs, take a youth pill or pursue a new career as a plumber/builder/professional surfer.

Gee, everyone really seem's to like the Pursuit. I have read a few review's online and there haven't been many big complaint's about the ute.

Nothing wrong with utes, the XR8 ute I drive I absolutely love to drive. The joy of driving with 500Nm on tap and torque pickup in any gear is superb. The exhaust note needs to be heard, I aint never heard anyone say it doesnt sound awesome.

But with 290kw and that aggressive body kit, IMO the pursuit is the toughest BA model out there

Reading the latest Performance Ford Mag an the test they did on a Pursuit and a XR8 ute you wouldn't buy a pursuit over the XR8. They got a best quarter mile for the XR8 at 14.2 and a best for the Pursuit at 14.1. The 0-100 kay times where about .06 of a second different to. The Pusruit handled a hell of a lot better but 14000 grand is a hell of a lot more money! (well for me anyway). No matter how I look at it I can't justify spending the extra 10 - 14 grand over a XR8 with a few options. I reckon the Pursuit looks horny as hell, but I can't help thinking the 14 g's would be better spent on custom wheels an a CAPA blower kit!

Just my opinion.
