The Preston boxes have a kevlar band which sometimes screaches on heavy loaded gear change. also on under run 1st gear disengages.

Is that what that noise is

OHH Adam what mod did you initially have prestons do to the auto?

My box had a smashed planetry gear set and all my bands were black. Prestons did there 2850 job, rated at atleast 380rwkws.I had the same noises as mickey G.

I took it back to Andrew @ Prestons on Saturday, he dropped the pan and did a full service on the auto. He said the oil still looked brand new (wife driving atm :spit: ). He is using new oil now and with the filter change and shift points rectified by the wog, the box is a monster again. Ask Fatz, 200 percent better than last week.

All this done FOC as part of Andrews ongoing fantastic service.

I don't think you will have an issue Adam, they are some of the best Tranny builders in th country.

Goodluck. :roflmbo:

Adam, if you've managed 50000 trouble free km, you have done well.

2nd and 4th gear are driven by the band clamping the drum.

At BVWE II I lost 2nd and 4th on my way to Heathcote! :roflmbo:

Managed to limp home to Adelaide in 3rd without issues.

Gearbox was opened, and found the kevlar was completely stripped from the band, and the drum was scored. (900+Nm will do that)

No other damage was sustained, but it did cost $600 to repair with new band and new drum and complete trans service .

The 4 speed ION auto has a problem in holding sufficient clamping torque on the band servo in very high torque applications, as you can achieve with high boost coming on early.

I was running ~16psi @ 3000 rpm, but have now reduced that to have better reliability of the trans.

I have had my race map detuned below 4000 rpm, to limit torque to about 750Nm, and it has been good since then.

Like I said, 50000 trouble-free km with 300rwkw O/P is pretty good going.

David at Kewish was working on a mod for the servo which he believed would overcome all the problems with band slip. He was using Goldies car for development work (>400 rwkw) Give him a call to see whether his fix worked.

My ute is going in tomorow to fix an oil leak from the rear left axle ???

I thought it may have been a hydraulic brake line leak at first, as there was oil smeared all on the inside of the rim.

Turns out the axle seal has let go.

Has anyone else had this issue? I searched, but didn't find anything.

cheers

tom

Hey Tom,

Had your box been previously strenthened, or was that the cost of repairs to a stock auto?

I suspect I am going to have to sort out my auto soon...

Me too, but if its going to cost $3K to do it, my car will be going back to stock :smilielol:
