A coupld of quick questions, how do you guys find the projectors over a Plasma/LCD/CRT TV? Size would be an advantage but what about quality and cost?

When I was looking at upgrading my TV, everyone was telling me that projectors were no good unless you had a dark room otherwise you can't see much of the picture. Is there any truth in this?

Another reason people were saying not to buy one is bulb life and the cost to replace them. What sort of life does one get out of a bulb?

I just ordered one of these... As our lounge didnt have a lot of space for a massive receiver and player... ( I have a Denon setup in our theatre and just wanted something smaller for the lounge )

The wireless rear speakers will be next to useless as I pre-wired both rooms in our house for 5.1 when we were building. But it has HDMI out and upscaling so will plug into the Samsung Rseries LCD tv we have on the way....

Will let you know how it all goes when it comes in at the end of the month.

I would agree that unless you have a dedicated/darkened room for your projector you really dont get great results for your money. Screen size for dollars is a projectors biggest forte. I am also more than happy with picture quality (and I'm fussy) Lamp life isnt a real issue if its not used as your primary display as most lamps last approx 1500-3000 hrs which in real terms is usually a few years of viewing before it needs replacing. Most lamps cost approx $400-$700.

If you are looking for a display for everyday viewing in all types of lighting conditions then my vote is plasma. IMO the best for TV and movies. (LCD if you also wanna use it for data or gaming) I use a 50" Pioneer plasma as my primary display for TV and the projector for movies and gaming.

I think Pic Quality-wise the projectors are catching up and even surpassing LCD/CRT/Plasmas etc.. although I think the conditions for optimal PQ are much stricter with a projector..

you definitely dont want masses of light pouring in, but some ambient is fine with todays 1500+ lumen PJ's

Bulb life is a factor and at the price ($350-700 depending on brand) it can be costly if you use your PJ for everyday viewing - that's why most people dont have a PJ in their living room but have a dedicated theatre room with a PJ for movies only...

but I mean 2000hours in bulb life = ~1000 movies at 2 hours each, or 3-4 movies a week for 5 years.. which IMO is plenty...

but yeh like PLAYRZ said, PJ is not the way to go for everyday viewing - LCD or plasma is the way to go there

I did use the pj for all tv at night and for some footy ect thru the day now after the 1st bulb, not so often.

Heres a tip if you have a power black out while watching your projector make a note of the date and time in your diary, it's what caused my bulb to blow.

The bulb supplier said that power black outs can cause the bulb not to cool via the fan and consequently blow the bulb when turning back on. guess what energex footed the $700.00 bill for the new one.

sound system

yamaha 7.1 amp RX-V650e with auto setup mic (also runs bose accustomass system under patio with 20inch lcd)

with accusound omega speakers (below) good sounding speakers and great service the center one had a rattle in it, I phoned them and the sent a brand new one overnight courier no questions asked.
