I am looking at pricing a home theatre system, the room I will have is about 3 m wide by 5 m long. Not a massive room, but should be enough for a two seater couch and a rug and beanbags. I am looking at running it through a computer system, that has to be simple enough for my missus and daughters to operate.

I have a quaote at the moment which I would love to post and will if someone can tell me how to remove details from a pdf file.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Scotty

I have a dedicated theatre room 3.7 x 5.3, so pretty similiar to you too.

Post away and I might be able to help.

Hey guys, I have been reading reviews on some of the home theatre systems designed to be run off computers. Made by Logitech and Creative. Both of them have THX certified systems with lots of power and bass.

These are 5.1 and 7.1 systems and are ideal for the size rooms you're looking at. At $700 to $800 they're right on the money. You can plug em in to the back of your pc via optical cable so their use is a snap.

Hi Scotty, whilst theprojector you're looking at is good, it does not display HDTV natively - XGA is only 768 lines which will do SDTV but not HDTV. For true hi def you would need to go a level up to a projector that does 1080 lines natively.

Go the upgrade on the speakers if you can afford it.

Yeah my suggestions... go for a HDMI projector, and better speakers than the logitech ones. They sound good close up, but when you want to crank them for the movies and music or whatever they really show their limits. Also, the Logitech speaker inputs are just 3.5mm jacks, try and get a stereo system with "SPDIF" input (assuming that the media centre PC will have a SPDIF output) so you can use the digital signal straight from the processor into the DTS/Dolby processor. The sound is so much crisper and surround dynamics are much much better.

Allright so let me get this right.

The box itself is Ok but its needs SPIF outputs?

The screen OK

Projector not HD able so no good?

Speakers are junk, look at an amp and better speakers?

yep spot on... Have a look at the specs of the motherboard though, it may already have the SPDIF output. Most do now.

If the projector specs say HDMI input you're good to go.

And speakers, that upgrade option you stated might have the digital input... but I would still go for proper home theatre speakers instead of computer ones... but that's me :spoton:
