NTTURBO Im just driving around Adelaide city and only idle at the lights. Even started to shove in to neutral at the lights. Maby like Aniken says, I need to blow the sh!t out of it ?

A steady speed, even 60-70km/h, with NO STOPS will achieve the same thing as a blast on the freeway. Get a series of red lights in a row and sure enough the fuel economy starts to climb (ie. worsen).

I almost always accelerate pretty hard away from a red light (race or no), and if I do this, I find that I generally get through the next one before IT turns red - must be something about the timing sequence of the lights and estimates of how long it takes the average car to get between them. Anyways, point is, this invariably allows me to maintain a steady speed with very few stops, and hence better fuel economy overall.

Guys,

AFAIK both Shell Optimax and Mobil8000 are only sold at Shell and Mobil petrol stations that are owned by Shell itself.

Independent operators who carry the shell or mobil name sell standard PULP instead. You can pick a company owned station because they will sell their top fuel.

There are a host of reasons for this, including giving the company owned stations an edge, and also because the way these stations are "paid" is different: they recieve their money on a "per litre pumped from the bowser basis", not on a "litres that have been delivered" basis. That way there is no incentive to order in crap fuel and pretend its Optimax/Mobil8000 to make more profit. Any extra fuel you order will quickly be noted by the systems because you have pumped more than you have bought. Since you get paid per litre pumped, you may as well pump the best stuff you can get, because it will keep the customers happier, and it doesnt cost you any less. Its using this mechanism that they effectively "guarantee" the quality of their top line fuels.

In fact if everyone remembers the ethanol scam, you will remember several of the Oil companies coming out and stating very clearly that they are unable to guarantee the fuel type or quantity of any fuels that are not sold through company-owned servos: shell/Mobil servos that do not sell Optimax/Mobil8000 are not company owned, and therefore nothing is guaranteed. The sign on the pole and the bowser doesnt mean the servo is company owned.

If your local servo doesnt stock those top fuels, dont hold your breath. It appears it will take them being bought out by Shell/Mobil before your servo starts to sell the good stuff.

still running PULP and a quick trip up the Hume to Albury today saw the trip computer drop from 19.9l/100km to 14.6l/100km. The DTE also went from the usual 400 odd km to 450km after a while. All in all I 'm happy with the city and Hwy economy of my beast :D
