Bov Mod

The point I was trying to make is this:

A turbocharger is a centrifugal air pump, and ANY centrifugal pump whether it pumps fluid or air will be exposed to shock loadings if the inlet is closed or restricted, and also if the outlet is closed or restricted, though to a lesser degree.

Given that we are talking about a compressible medium (air) here, there is more flexibility, and the application is more forgiving than with fluid, however, there is no doubt that from a mechanical engineering point of view, it is better to avoid having these shock loads in the first place.

Now you may run 999 turbos where this has no impact, but just maybe on car 1000 something will fail as a result, thus the recommendation to have a BOV in the first place.

Another statement from Garret regarding BOV's: "Blow-Off Valves will improve throttle (time to boost) response as well as help relieve the damaging effects of compressor "surge loading".

I just assume that the manufacturer who makes thousands of these things, will have a fair idea :crybaby:

I agree with you ninka garrett has a bit more of a clue than some others!!!!!

couple of thaughts compare:

a, comp and turbine wheel size to shaft size in a vl

b, now the ba roller turbo

c, now tell me which one has the larger wheel to shaft size ratio?

d, why would you use a totally different designed turbo as an example to make a point when its not relevent?

go with garrett's recomendations as some others talk  or just wear the costs!!!!! :bum::bum::bum:

Ninka,

I'm assuming that what I've done to mine is still safe?? as it's still using the BOV but simply venting atmo?? Or is there more to it then that??

As long as you have a filter, you are safe (not legal though :crybaby: )

so a filter over the BOV?? I was under the impression that air wouldn't get sucked through?? when I put my hand over it, I could certainly feel air coming out.. or would it suck air in when the car is under load?? I was told that a filter wasn't needed because air wouldn't be getting in that way, only out.

Many thanks to all the replies guys, it's much appreciated.

Gday guys,

Just finished reverse venting my blow off valve like others have done but went for a drive and I can barely hear it, if hear it at all. I have put a filter on the end to keep at dirt out of it.

Any ideas why I cant hear it??

Cheers

Yes I am running a K&N filter on it

Basically I blocked off the pipe at the back, and ran the other pipe into the blow off valve an vented the other back to atmosphere with a filter on the end of it and extended the vacuum pipe and re-connected it??

Confused

bit confused lol all you need to do is block the return hose at the back near the

firwall and block that and just twist the bov so it face up and just chuck the lil filter ontop of the oulet that ventin out to atmo all done.

got a pic on how you done it?

it should look like this the angle not the best but the idea.

that's basically what I have done.

Its the same as Crans has done on this post

http://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=32557

only problem with that setup is that the piping more longer and your on

stock boost so there not much air to be push out. do it the other way

and should work good even put a pod filter works even better :roflmbo:
