That seems strange, because the warped discs don't seem to happen just by driving around. Maybe they are talking about the handbrake dragging?

I had my discs replaced again. This time I was told that they replaced the whole hub, not just the disc?? I thought the Disc and Hub were one unit. They couldn't be talking about the axle assembly could they?

Anyway, the shudder is gone again, and this time I'll be heating them up ASAP and see if I get shudder or fade, and also make sure it goes away once they cool down!

Mal,

The hub is a separate item that houses the wheel bearings and studs. This is fitted to the stub axle support or upright. The rotor locates on the hub spigot and studs and clamped together with the wheel.

a nice picture of the 4000 series would have been nice with the picture of the hub steve.

As an Engineer (not a salesman) I try to avoid the cheezey sales tactics on a technical forum. :D

Here is a link if anyone would like to see/read about the 4000 series.

I have just been notified that Ford now has found a solution to the brake problem. They believe that the problems have been caused by the pad retaining springs not retracting the pads from the rotor properly which then allows the pad to drag on the rotor causing excessive heat buildup and the subsequent warping of the disc. The new parts should be in next week and will be fitted. Here's hoping that Ford have found the problem. Time will tell !!!

Another piece to the puzzle....

Why would Ford say that they need to replace the whole hub assembly?... does this mean that just replacing your discs may not fix the problem???

Also, if that retaining spring is faulty, is this likely to warp the new discs, be it DBA or original Ford Discs anyway?

Now I'm really worried

Mal,

It is possible the hub was out of tolerance which compounded the problem with the shudder. This may be why it was replaced so early.

A disc rotor won't fix a dodgy pad or caliper if this is the problem....

Does anyone know for sure that the hub and spring is direct cause of the brake shudder that a lot of us have been experiencing with the front rotors.

The reason I ask is I've scheduled to have a sit a BDA rotors fitted next week and I will hold off and get the the hub sorted before I go and replace the rotors. I have a feeling that Ford wont fix the hubs if I install aftermarket rotors.
