I has the head techy from my local dealership in my "T" yesterday (he just sat there & said nothig about the noticeable increase in poke n noise) But he did mention the new cars are about to get a new type caliper, of course not to be retro fitted to older cars. Be interesting to see retail prices when they hit the parts catalogue & what their owners say when they come to www.fordxr6turbo.com

Does anyone know the dates that these improvements were implemented on the production line ?

Particularly the revised shims...

(I have the car booked in for the 3000km service next week, it would be nice to know if I should get the shims done - but I'll be talking to the service advisor and getting them to re-torque the wheel nuts to 135Nm.)

Thanks !

231 kms and no shudder yet :)

BUT, the XR6T STINKS!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a 'burning' smell coming from somewhere.  It's worse than the 'new car smell' I'm used to.

All I can say is that it is NOT from the engine bay - it doesn't get worse when I stick my nose in the bonnet..  Rear brakes?????

Mac_Dude

I can't help other than to say , I experienced the same prob.

Probably something from the assembly process burning off from exhaust

heat shield etc.

Good thing is , it disappeared in a couple of days

Yeah, I've had that "burning" smell too. Sometimes come through the fresh air intakes after parking for a while. Especially apparent when the car is hot and goes in the garage. I also think it's related to the heat shielding. I reckon it's slowly going away, but maybe I'm getting used to it!

Shims, early October fitted at factory and parts released to dealers mid October.

Calipers, late(usually about the third week) October onwards.

Oh, and there is a small puddle of 'red something' under the right front wheel. Tomorrow in the light I'll look at the fluid levels.

Mac_Dude,

Check under your vehicle and make sure nothing is leaking. They normally get pretty smelly after a pre delivery road test as they burn off all the crap on the exhaust and driveline.A bit strange to still smell after 200 kay's though. Not sure what the red stuff might. You havent run over some roadkill by any chance??

mac_dude

check the heat shield above the exhaust manifold.

a lot of us guys had a problem with a small palastic clip that is supposed to be removed at predelivery, melts on to the heat shield.

Back again. I've found it interesting that the brake shudder still hasn't been resolved for a lot of owners. My baby is a 11/02 build and had brake shudder after 2500km. Went down the road of going to the dealer EVERY time I experienced shudder for replacement rotors. NOT machining. The dealer changed rotors 8 times.(you read it right 8 times.) To get something done you have to make the dealer network work!

Anyhow the only fix was to install a new brake set up! Check out the rotors and calipers on the new Territory and you'll all see what I mean. Look very very similar to Commodore.(Just washed my mouth out with hydrochloric acid!) Tells you something about the specs on the standard BA caliper. Another note of interest is the part# on the standard rotor; starts with AV!(the original AU replacement??) These brakes were designed a looooong time ago, as lead time for production is measured in years not weeks.

But back to the point. I had Ford premium brakes fitted by a dealer(at my cost) to keep it in the family.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

The only difference, and the only parts that are required are 2x premium rotor(a Bembo patent applies to these rotors, built by Rossini.) 2x PBR two pot(pistons 40.5mm) caliper, 2X rear premuim rotors(grooved to match the front.) and 4x low-expansion brake hoses. Rear caliper remain the same, Booster remains the same, master cylinder remains the same, stub axle/steering knuckle remains the same.(you loose the front brake dust shields as the premium brake rotor is "offset" and does not allow fitment of the dust shield as it "hangs-out" further/closer to the wheels! (I wonder if the brake shudder has more to do with a harmonic imbalance than the satndard rotors as most of the shudder is felt through the steering wheel than throught the brake pedal. The last T3 5.6l tickford cars had a similar problem in prototype cars, before tickford re-positioned the brembo caliper on those cars.)

For those who want to keep going back to the dealer go with Fords "band-aid" fix of shims, spells, and crossing fingers, or do yourself a favour and fit premiums, brembo's, AP, Alcon, or anything else. At least the Premiums work!(Even the wife noticed the difference in the way the car felt!!!!!)

Sad but true!!! :banghead:

Yep, now have 8000 plus on mine and smell has gone.

Driving to work this morning and pulled up beside a brand new one, not yet registered with trade plates on and guess what?

I could smell that smell again coming from the new one!!

So pretty sure it will disappear after a while......
