dbasteve,

If it is not already here and I have missed it, I think with all these people buying DBA rotors that bedding in instructions would be a good idea to list on the site. I'm sure that CJF would be glad to put up a section like that, from the horses mouth.

I run DBA slotteds on my MY98 WRX and they're heaps better than the standard subaru items. Been with Bendix Ultimate pads now for 100,000km. Also, I believe that the slotteds are recommended/approved for sprints and track days, whereas the drilled rotors are not. Can you clarify this.

thanks

Andrew

dbasteve,

What's your opinion on the removal of the black metal dust covers behind the wheels on BA XR's?

Do they cause more heat?

Those Black metal discs that your refering to are not realy dust shields! If they were they would block any air flow to the face of the wheel rim similar to what used to be on EL fairmonts and the like. The main reason that they are there is so that ford dont have to paint the disc hub. If that shield is not inplace you can see the rusty hub, like in the pictures by davoXT,

http://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/index.ph...e=post&id=31560

which is uglier than the shield. we have looked at painting them but for some reaon they keep going back to these shields. The paint on the cast surfaces doesn't seem to last as long as the shield in terms of looks either. Remove the shield if you like but its not worth your time in regards to temps, as we have sealed the face of the wheel and done tests and the temp of the brakes is no different! One of the main causes of heat build up in the brakes of current cars is the fact that the brakes are so far inside the wheel rim. Have a look under an old car and the brakes are out in the wind. these days they are almost at the outside edge protected from all the air flow by the wheel. If you want to help cool the brakes fit some fins to the wheel face to draw some air in that way! The rear brakes are the ones that get the hottest and we have fitted 5' ducts to the body and onto the rear brakes and it delays brake fade for ages but who is going to have ducts like that!Maybe we need some vents in the rear door like in a ferrari F40!

hope that helps!

2300km, slight shudder experienced after activating abs twice for testing purposes (never had a car with it before, didn't know what it does).

Looks like I've got the shakes as well (8000km)... I live in Maryborough and only do short trips on a daily basis. So I hardly use the brakes. My 'T' is a manual.

I also drive to Brisbane each month (250km) and have noticed shudder at highway speeds (90-120km/hr) on my last trip.

At first I thought this was an intermittent problem, but soon figured out that the faster I went, the worse the shudder. You really can't pick it up under about 80 km per hour.

It's weird since the car has not "hammered" and neither have the brakes and I have not been through any water.

Any thoughts apart from the green disc theory.... Electronic Brake Distribution problems maybe?

Could the black disc be pressed or slotted so they blow cool air on the brakes?

IMO Not realy cause the wheel rim stops the air from going in that far anyway! Did you paint the discs on your car DavoXT after removing the shields? Nice red or something? HAHA!

The Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) on the falcon is basically a fancy way of saying the car has ABS! Other than that not much is different except the front to rear brake bias is different!

The main problem that is causing this shudder is the fact of the brake pads skimming the disc surface all the time and the pad material deposits its self on the disc and then causes the shudder. We need more aggresive pads to take that deposit off or calipers that pull the pads off the disc more but this causes poor initial pedal feel. will see what happens but its got nothing to do with the discs! we have tested different brands and they still shudder at the same point as standard discs!

Thanks Harasn,

I removed the shields today, IMO it's looks far better without them, glad I removed them.

I think it may be placebo effect but I think the car has less road noise without them!!! :ermm:

Now to get some new DBA rotors to really finish off the car, anyone know the cheapest place to pick some up from in Melbourne?
