Just a note,

If you do go DBA rotors, and they are 4000 or 5000 series don't go Bendix Ultimate Pads.

The reason is that the rotor is capable of handling 750c temperatures, and Bendix Ultimates can only handle 450c.

For a couple of bucks (bout $10) more, go for the Ferodo Formula pads.

They are rated to 650c.

I've had the DBA4000, and Bendix Ultimates on for 6 weeks before going on a track day and I destroyed the pads, and stuffed the rotors (luckily a machine job fixed the rotors).

I've fit Ferodo Formula pads on at 20,000kms, and have not had any shudder at all and I was close to 50,000kms. I've also been very hard on my brakes, I never went easy on them.

Have you ever had your brakes glowing red at night? I have :lol:

Anyone looked into or considered EBC slotted and dimpled disks and kevlar pads for their XR? I ran them on my Land Rover Discovery and they were great.

I have heard that the cross drilled rotors are prone to cracking. The EBC ones are just dimpled, ie not drilled straight through.

Could be another option. They do alot of race applications.

I dont have prices for the XR as I have only had it a few weeks. Prices for the Discovery wont really be comparitive.

I will ring them tomorrow to see if they do anything for the XR's. I just had a look at the disk catalogue on their website http://www.ebcbrakes.com.au/ and they dont seem to have them - just UK and american models I think?

There is another catalogue that cross references Bendix part numbers with theirs, so if anyone knows the Bendix part numbers for the XR they might be able to see if they have suitable pads.

But if you have a look at the pic of the disks on the Product Range page you will see what I mean about the slotted and dimpled disks. Shame if they dont do them for the XR's though.

Hi again,

OK so I called EBC today to talk about brakes for XR's.

They currently do not have their you beaut slotted and dimpled rotors available for the XR. They did however say they can get RDA slotted discs. (Never heard of RDA before - stands for Rotors & Discs Australia).

They are also about a month or so away from their Greenstuff Kevlar pad being available. They will be more expensive than the likes of Bendix, QFM etc. but you pay for what you get. Check out their website for the advantages of Kevlar - I'll be putting a set on when the current pads are worn. Some of the points I like are the lack of brake dust, no squeal, higher operating temperature without brake fade and that for a HD pad they do not need any warm up to bite, ie they bite from cold and have a high temp rating.

Anyway so there's the story on EBC. Oh and I have no affiliation with them whatsover other than I have used their stuff before and was impressed.

Hmm so I spent the early hours of the morning looking for info on RDA on the web (bugger all) and decided to look over the DBA website.

The DBA Longlife Gold Slotted & Drilled discs look like damn fine stuff. Anyone actually running them on here?? They do say that some slight cracking around the holes can be normal??? They certainly look the goods, although that black disc behind the mag will cover most of the gold hub when they are on.

So I'm thinking, DBA Longlife Slotted (as per NSW Police choice) or DBA Longlife Gold teamed up with EBC Greenstuff Kevlar (when they are out) would be a pretty awesome combo.

I'll keep you posted on what I do when they brakes are up for changing.

I really cannot believe all this brake shudder stuff. I mean, you would have thought that Ford did some extensive testing with the BA prior to production and it must have been revealed then. You would think that the brakes being so fundamental to a car, and with the years of experience in making them, that this would never have appeared. What's worse is that a bandaid (machining) is used to 'fix' it. :kiss:

I don't have my T yet so what I don't understand is:

* Is it the brake pads that overheat and scorch the disks?

* Is the disk metal not good enough so it warps?

Lets hope the next model in 2006 doesn't use brake-by-wire to 'prevent' this from ever happening again.

I don't know what you think but I'd say brake-by-wire is inherently unsafe (just note the number of potentiometers that have been replaced for drive-by-wire). I prefer a large steel rod prodding the brake cylinder with my foot rather than some electric soleniod pushing the brake cylinder with a mtbf of 50,000 hours.

I wonder if the mercs/bmws with brake-by-wire systems include free comprehensive death insurance. :lol:
