Horn Stuck On... Intermittently!

Hey guys,

I have a BA XR6T, auto, standard. Tonight in a carpark it just randomly started beeping continuously. Pressing buttons on the remote made the beeping stop for a split second. Pressing the "panic alarm" did switch the horn over to the beep-beep-beep pattern then turning the alarm mode off seemed to make it shut up for about 1-2 minutes.... then it just starts beeping continously again. :msm:

ARGH. Very annoying, and embarrassing. So I've come home (with the car beeping ALL THE WAY) and pulled the horn fuse. Not a permanent solution you'd agree.

I've played with the steering wheel buttons so it doesn't look like one of them is stuck down or anything like that...

Any ideas?

Do you have an alarm fitted to it?

Otherwise it could be a faulty remote - try removing the battery from it to see if that has any impact.

I had this problem with my ED XR6 - it started beeping when I was behind a few Rebels bikies at a red light - most embarassing.

That was a problem with the copper contacts under the rubber bit in the steering centre - they were too close together. I just bent them back so that they werent so close, but I had to push my horn much harder.

No alarm, just the standard Ford remote, which seems to work fine.

Don't know if I'm game enough to go pulling the steering wheel apart. It does just sound like a dodgy contact though.

I wont be the remote-and on the ed the reason for the failure is not contacts being too close, its the foam in between perishing. It used to happen all the time, I have not struck it on a ba but I assume the have a similar set up around the air bag.

Could also possibly be a faulty horn relay...

Easy enough to check though... simply measure across the coil pins of the horn relay socket and see if they are measuring 12V on and off. (Assuming the horn goes on and off all the time this will work... if your intermitent horn problem occurs infrequently, this may not be a viable method of test)

If you do measure 12V on and off, then it isn't your relay that is at fault.

So, took it to Ford. They put the fuse back in. They left it sit there all day, waiting for it to beep. It didn't beep. They "checked over all the connections and terminals" and found nothing wrong. It hasn't malfunctioned since.

*sigh* :tease:

At least they didn't charge me....
