Looking for a Digital SLR.

Looking around, all seem much of a muchness from the outside, but looking at quality image samples, there's a large difference.

Is there a better BFYB camera than the EOS 30D from Canon??

I won't be printing off anything larger than A4 and I know pik quality is largely lens dependant.

Any recommendations on a good lens + brands??

Looking around $2500 for Body and Lens(s). Maybe up to ~100mm lens ?

Cheers :gooff:

I'd recommend the Nikon D80 with 18-135 kit. You'll pick up one of these for approx. $2000-$2300. If you can stretch the budget to about $3000 you can get it kitted with an 18-200 VR (Vibration Reduction) lens. This is an excellent combo.

Canon offers the EOS 400D Enthusiast Kit for around $2000-$2300 mark aswell. It comes with the 17-85 IS (Image Stabilized) USM lens. Much better lens than standard kit. The 30D will set you back almost another $1000 for the same setup.

Pentax K10D is also and excellent camera. Allow $1300ish for body only plus whatever lens takes your fancy. Allow $600-$1500 for a decent lens.

I have the Canon EOS 350D (new model is 400D) which I picked up on E-bay for under a grand (they were about $1600 at the time).

it's 9 MP and 400D is 10 Megapixels. Prints absolutely fantastic A3 photos at the printers and great A4's on home printer. I have several framed around the house that people ask who took them for us etc.

I went for Canon as all my old SL/R lenses were compatible so it solved the problem of me having them all sitting around doing nothing. I have been buying some lenses from E-bay also as new lenses are not glass lens/metal body but plastic/plastic body and Made in China but still work fine for an amateur such as myself really.

You should be able to get a 400D with 2 lenses (18-55 & 75-300mm) for under $1200

The Nikon is impressive also. You'll get good deals on e-Bay ex Hong Kong that Harvey Norman etc won't be able to match. My camera was delivered to my door in Kalgoorlie in 3 days ex Hong Kong which I can't complain about.

Hope this helps

I'm a Canon man but in the BFYB, I'd say Pentax K10D, or Nikon D80 wins.

For want you want to do all of the DSLR's available are good. Canon has the best lens line up and has more IS lenses than Nikon, but unless you plan on getting into sports or wild life photography that's not really an issue.

30D has cleanest images at high ISO and has best AF for tracking moving objects, but D80 is pretty close. D80 has several features the 30D hasn't, but 30D has faster frame rate, top shutter speed.

I have a vast amount of money tied up Canon gear, and I'll be staying with Canon, but if you are just starting out, Nikon, Pentax, Sony, Canon and even Olympus have good stuff, but I'd stay away from the Sony for now. It's there first effort and I think we'll see a much better product this year.

I have a Nikon D70s for the past 15 months and it is awsome. I can take about 2,000 pictures on one battery charge, take 144 pictures in a row at about 2.5 pic a second and it takes the CF memory that everything else I own takes.

I looked at what I could get for $1600 and the choice was between the Canon 350D and the D70s. Everyone said the bodys are about the same, but the Nikon bundled lense is the best, where the bundled canon lense was rubbish.

Either camera will make you happy and do what you are asking and a lot more.

I have the Nikon D70, which now is superseded by the D80 I think, very happy with the quality of the camera and the picture quality. It was also a bonus that all my old lenses and speedlight from my F801 fitted straight on. I would stay with either Nikon or Canon.

Ive used the Sony Alpha quite a bit (I sell them).

They are a very nice camera, 10MP, They are based on the Minolta so they use the same lense mount, millions of lenses out there for them.

Great inbuilt anti shake and the battery life is almost double that of most others. (One thing that other companies cant touch on is sony battery technology) eg compare there mp3 players to ipods LOL.

But overall it is a very nice camera. should be able to pick up twin lens kit (wide and telephot el cheapo but not too bad sony lenses) for around 1700 hund.

The D70 was a nice camera and the D80 is much better

I supply a lot of photos to magazines, mainly airshow and air to air aircraft photos and can only speak for Canon as that's all I use.

The 30D is a very good camera, its bigger and nicer to handle than the 350 and 400D but they do have the same sensor and as I use a fe bigger lenses a bigger body is quite useful

FPS on the 30D is very good as is the AF.

I have a 20D as well and do notice the difference when shooting a lot of images in a hurry, the 30D is just more refined.

Hoping there is a 40D coming soon with the auto sensor clean as sensor cleaning is the biggest problem the SLR has,

Feel free to ask and questions if you like. :tease:

Below are a few examples taken with the 20 and 30D :spoton:
