Turbo Oil Supply Screen Cleaning

O.K

just changed the turbo line filter.

If you are reading this with intention of performing this task, just read the first post with pics so you know what you are looking at and the last couple of pages as posters have found quicker and easy ways and I will also sum up my experience, but don't panic as this is the easiest thing to do as all you are effectively doing is undoing a bolt.

Things you don't need:

1: to be a mechanic

2: a cut-off 24mm spanner

3: heaps of time

Things you do need:

1: enough time that you usually need to do an oil change, filter included.

2: 24mm deep socket ( $3 from soupercheep)

3: turbo oil filter bolt from ebay seller in link in previous post

4: 14mm copper washers x 2. You can't buy these at auto places. Try a Brake place. That's where I got mine from. Fraud are too expensive.

I changed my filter bolt as part of an oil change.

As in previous posts, I removed air filter box and oil filter as this gives very easy access from top. In all honesty, if you are able to this , the line filter removal will be easy. I found the front bolt removal of the air filter box to be more time consuming.

Copper washers go on each side of oil line Banjo fitting.

What I noticed is that the new filter had larger holes for banjo fitting than the one I removed and filter was also longer. My filter appeared to be pretty clean but I will wait till I get back to work where I can pull it apart for closer inspection.

I hope this post helps. Honestly, if you can undo a bolt you can do this. I think more of the hype is the importance in changing the filter rather than the task itself.

my car just ticked over 170kms... got a mechanic to remove this infamous filter... its so fine its no wonder it can be blocked... mine was not blocked thank god which surprised me .. only owned car for last 5000kms and previous owner only changed oil every 15thou kms!!!

Checked mine today.Took out air box,took off oil filter.1" open ended spanner,spark plug socket,24mm socket.2 new copper washers and some gasket goo.pulled it out and found the screen had allready been removed.So put it back together.roughly an hour taking my time and no leaks.A big THANK YOU to all you guys for a very informative forum.I have learnt so much from this site about xr6 turbo's.

Just 2 let u all know my filter clogged up and turbo had 2 b replaced, I didn't know that there was a filter on there as this is my first turbo I've always had xr8's, it had done 143k wen it happened

that's sucks.. its seems like luck of the draw with these things... some will block and some wont... like I said my car done more kms and 15kms service intervals previous owner and the filter was fine....

whats everyones opinion on this , gonna service it this weekend and wondering is it worth doing the earls line kit or just remove the screen from the standard bolt ?

Remove the standard screen that's for sure. Also worth cleaning out the line as it can get a buildup of crap inside.

Heaps of people have no filter at all - with no issues.

Then again it doesn hurt to fit an earls line and have some extra piece of mind. the filter position makes it piss easy to clean/maintain.
