Previous pc's have been HP crapolas that have been good for office workers but no good as gaming machines. Originally I was going to buy a custom pc with a budget of around $1000 but soon realised that my budget wouldn't stretch far. Because I'm now buying the components as I can afford them my budget will stretch that little bit further.I have already bought the case, HDD and dvd writer.Case : Thermaltake Soprano with 430w PSUHDD : Western Digital WD3200KS 320gb 7200rpm 16mb SATAII/300DVD: Pioneer DVR-111DSV Silver DVD Writer, 16x DVR+/-R, 8x DVD+/-R Dual Layer, 40x CDRW, 16x DVDROM, UDMA 66I need advice on the motherboard and graphics card. I've decided to go the AMD cpu (probably a single core AMD AM2 4000+) instead of the Intel because of RAM compatability issues with the Intel CPU's. I don't have a need for the dual core CPU's as yet and can always upgrade when prices drop. I've been told that the best bang for buck CPU for gaming is the Intel Core 2 Duo's but not all RAM works with them. The RAM I was referred to is the Corsair Extreme but I'm looking at prices of $350+ for a 2024mb kit. Once again though I do not have a need for a dual core cpu.I've been looking at the HIS X1950PRO-ICEQ3T-D3D video card (found here: http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/20723 and was wondering if anyone has had experience with these cards? I've read up on the card at all of the PC sites but am looking for an unbiased opinion as all the pc sites seem to have their favourite companies. For the mobo I've been looking at the Gigabyte GA-M55plus-S3G and have pretty much settled on it, unless someone tells me that it's crap and to look elsewhere. So all up the system will look like this once built:Thermaltake Soprano Midi Tower with 430w PSU $135AMD AM2 4000+ CPU $165Gigabyte GA-M55plus-S3G Mobo $129HIS X1950PRO-ICEQ3T-D3D video card $335Corsair Value Select 1GB PC5300 (667mhz) DDR2 RAM CAS5 $165Western Digital WD3200KS 320gb 7200rpm 16mb SATAII/300 HDD $145Pioneer DVR-111DSV Silver DVD Writer $55Total cost = $1129Any advice appreciated..TIA Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/32299-advice-needed-from-the-pc-experts/ Share on other sites

You could get a better video card, but the one you have selected is a greag BFYB. They are good but for the same price you can get a kick arse nvdia card.I play battlefied 2142 which uses the most resorces for any game I have seen. I have 2GB RAM, nvidia gforce 7800 GT vid card, AMD64 4000 cpu and same hard drive as you. If you want games to run average-good then I would not get anything less than this. Also with those stats I would put off upgrading to windows vista for a while becuase it uses a lot more resources than windows XP. At the moment I have Windows Vista but can use battlefield 2142 until a new vid and sound driver is released.Basically for a gaming system you will be getting an above average-good system. but then it really depends on what games your playing. This is the other card that I have been looking at:XFX PV-T71P-UDD7 Geforce 7900GS XXX Edition, 256MB GDDR3, PCI Express, Dual DVI, HDTV, SLI, 20 Pipeline, 600/1600mhzAll the numbers pretty much mean diddly squat to me. Is this card better for gaming? I really don't want to spend more than $350 on the video card. I have an X800 but my nvidia fx5200 was faster in the system I have currentlyso I'm gonna flog it off to my little brother and go back to nvidia. Also a lot less drivers issues with nvidia I think as well. Nvidia just have better drivers me thinksMotherboards, ASUS has always been good to meAnyways, AMD + Nvidia is a good combo Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/32299-advice-needed-from-the-pc-experts/#findComment-493727 Share on other sites

Sold my 360 a couple of months ago when I was over gaming. I might still pick up a 360 again when the price drops and they bring out the next version (which is rumoured to be quieter and quicker). It all depends on which games are hot and which are not at the time.My current pc is also 7 years old and I need an upgrade. May as well do it well while I have the money to do so. Quote Anyways, AMD + Nvidia is a good comboThank You. I had read something like that before but couldn't remember which was better (nvid or radeon) Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/32299-advice-needed-from-the-pc-experts/#findComment-493734 Share on other sites
