Hello everybody.

I am new to the forum and have found it to be a foundation of information that is well worth my time. Thanks to everyone.

I have recently bought the xr6 Turbo and have been enjoying the ride so much in comparison to the girls ride I had before(Mazda3).

However with the luxury of having so much power at one's FOOT per say, it comes at a cost. I have done 880km so far and that was two tank fulls. At $89.00 a pop for each tank, I am feeling the pinch, hehehe.

From what I have read so far, the "edit" could help me in the sense that if I get a custom setup done, I could reduce the fuel consumption and gain extra power. The extra power is not necessary for me and the question that begs to be answered is:

Is there a way to get a custom setup done where the power remains the same but fuel consumption is improved?

The other question I have, is that when I picked up the car from the dealer he told me not to run the car with 95. He said the car would not so well. With a custom map, will it allow you to run 95 safely?

Absolutely but you will probably loose some power. You might be able to modify the car then tune it on 95 to make a bit more then stock power, but to make good power you have to burn more fuel.

The Ford Owners Manual says the turbo can run on 95. Of coarse it'll be a bit better on 98

Your economy probably suffering due to the new found joy of the extra power under foot. To get better economy you'll need to change your driving habits.

A custom tune can extract better use of power/fuel. The maps can be altered especially in the cold start/cold runing areas, factory where they are very rich. A 98 tune will also enable a more efficient tune and achieve much better fuel economy. You can have a custom tune for 95 done with your car in stock form but really the difference will only be minimal. Tune and flash box will cost anywhere between $1500-2000, so for just a bit of extra fuel economy not really worth it IMO.

WA G6ET thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention that I have already bought a K&N filter. I have always believed in using the K&N filters.

I am not sure if I should get ford to put it in at the free 3000km service.

I am sure that the xr6t would benifit from a tune after the filter goes in.

Do you still recogn it won't be worth the tune?

Hey Mate,

Congrats on the purchase.. They are excellent cars to drive.

If you're feeling the pinch for fuel I don't think an edit is gonna help you that much.. Personal opinion here but especially if you're doing a lot of urban driving I can't see it benefiting much more then may -1.0l/100 km.

Also if you're worried about cost/benefit of the car. You'd probably be smarter to keep it stock (except for the K&N) so you can take full advantage of the warranty from Ford, because things do go wrong and often in these cars. A tune with void that warranty quicker then a vegetarian on laxatives.

Anyways good luck with your decision.

Brenno, thanks for the reply. My new found love has come at a cost. Sitting down and working things out, I have found that if I take it easy I can get roughly 600km per tank for urban driving, no freeways involved.

If I take the freeway to work, my average economy is better, but I have to travel more kms. The average economy is a lot better but I spend more fuels. It is a catch 22. I just can not resist a drag against dem commodores.... especially the SS.

I understand that completely.. If your feeling the pinch check out trainers thread in the G6 section. He's got a T running on BBQ gas.. Apparently goes like a treat.

Is it possible to get a custom Tune without having to purhcase the flash box(where your Tuner keeps/stores your Tune just in case)? I really don't see the value of the flasher if you want 1 tune in the car. It would work out half the cost then :)
