Turbo Upgrade

Hi Guys

How much does it take to do a upgrade to a bigger turbo. And is it worthwhile to upgrade turbo. Does anyone know where I can get one.

Why do you want to upgrade?

Generally, when a turbo is sized for a specific application, there will be some extra overhead anyway, allowing you maybe 20-30% more power from a turbo volume capacity alone - in a badly sized application, gains may be more, or less.

So, you have to ask youself why a bigger turbo?

Realizing, you will need more fuel, thus possibly bigger injectors, depending the current duty-cycle at your max useable rpm, maybe bigger fuelpump, better fuelregulator...

Then let's get to the engine...what compression ratio you running? Are the shape of the combustion chambers conducive to inhibit, or promote detonation.

Pistons, conrods, crank, main bearings...can they handle the increased load?

Brings us back to why do you want a bigger turbo, if the current one will very well suffice to boost your motor to the point of destruction?

Then a std turbo, with a wastegate and actuator mod will give you that power no probs...

As for which kit, im running 350+rwkw with a stage 2...but to be on the safe side a stage 3 will give you that reliably...

@ KaiV6: I am taking my car next week for Stage2+Extras.

a Standard stage2 should give you around 335kW average on the rears, if you hasve a baseline XR6T to work from. This will include a new airbox, new intercooler, new intake manifold, podfilter, miscellaneous bits and pieces, Capa flashunit with custom dynotune.

Cost roughly $7,995-

I go for the extra bit, which also includes the following: New stainless steel low restriction stainless zorst, including cat, twin pipes too the rear.

New Walbro intank high-capacity pump

Engineering of Turbo stock wastegate to accept bigger dump valve.

All together, roughly $10,600-, give or take $100- here and there.

This should bring me up to an average rating of peak 385rwkw, and the reason I can get to this levels without to much fuss lies in the fact that the BF F6 bottom end (read conrods) are substantially beefier than the stock BA XR6T units.

Max power for BA XR6T with stock subassembly should not exceed most likely 350rwkw, with a substantial risk of reliability issues a this level.

Even with my F6, I have requested Simon at Nizpro to do me 2 maps, one around 340-350rwkw as a daily option, and when needed, I can use Flasher to dump max perf map to my ECU, yielding a few extra rwks's, up to around the mid 380 mark.

What car you have? Model, etc...

Anyway, look at the link provided, it will point you to Nizpro's website, and their you will find pricing structure, component breakdown, etc.

Always ask yourself - how much power do I want, how much do I need, and what you can practically use.

Too much is not always the best, yoou have to somehow put all these little ponies to the tarmac, and that in itself creates unique challenges.

Most likely something around the 290-300rwkw mark will be a significant amount of power to deal with, but not so much that it will question the reliability of your driveline - if treated correctly that is.

Then, as a backstop, have a 325rwkw tune handy for those rare cases you might need it - with the idea that it exponentially increase the risk of you breaking something.

I don't want to start an argument here, but do you really think the BF rods are 100% safe at 385rwkw?

I seem to remember that the rods are no stronger than F6 rods, and some of those have broken or bent at less power than 385rwkw.

I'm interested in you thoughts on this, as I have the full Nizpro kit, and 2 x 2 1/2" quad tip exhaust, with SMB 4" dump and 5" cat, and I decided to upgrade my rods, but still have stock pistons, and running about 345rwkw.
