I've seen some ads around advocating cooler thermostats. Apparently the standard thermostats open at ~95 deg C, whereas the "powerstat" thermostats open at ~85.

Found a few posts on here regarding them with comments like "keeps the engine cooler", but no actual results. Has anyone measured any difference with a lower temp thermostat?

It's pretty much standard fitment to modified cars, although you need the edit to control the thermo fans, otherwise it's a pointless excersize.

Oh, just go to your local parts shop and get the cooler thermostat, it's a stocked part.

As far as benefit. Well if the engine runs cooler, you can dial in more advance timing without the risk of det..

I know I'm missing something here...

So with the colder thermo, the fans com on earlier. But as you say, edit can change when they come on anyway yeah?

I know im missing something, and I suspect it has to do with what else the thermo controls...?

I wonder if all the Euro 3 (or whatever number it is) emission gear on the BF would have a fit if a cooler thermostat was installed?

The thermostat controls the coolant flow. It reaches a certain temperature, then opens.

A lower temp thermostat will allow the coolant to flow ealier, keeping the temp down.

If you had no thermostat and the engine would run too cool. Your engine needs to run 'hot' to be efficient.

I had my thermo  its self the other week and ended up buying a $50 from a auto shop in the hills area. the only diffence I noticed from the stock thermosta to the new thermostat was that the engine warms up quicker with the new one. :spoton:

when I originally got my tune from extreme he thought I had a different thermostat installed, and I was noticing that my thermo fans would come on, and stay on for the entire time I drove the car (even in winter at 0 deg outside). Temp gauge always sat near the half way mark. With the new thermostat the temp sits about a 1/4, and when it really hot outside it'll sit a few mm from the centre

would run hotter as there is no restriction to slow the flow of coolant.

Ah, that clears it up. Cheers.
