The managing director of Ford Performance Vehicles, Sak Royoppen was fired yesterday despite leading FPV to record sales last year. FPV will continue as a joint venture between Ford and Prodrive with Prodrive Asia - Pacific boss Bryan Mears taking direct control of the specialist car maker. 2 other senior FPV managers were also sacked.

Seems a bit odd given how well they were doing but to sack the boss and 2 others makes you think there was something going on behind the scenes.

CARSALES.COM.AU: Top Executives Axed

Top management executives of Melbourne's carsales.com.au, were

fired Tuesday through a management restructuring move led by

Reynolds & Reynolds, Carsales' major shareholder, with backing

by Yahoo! and about 200 independent car dealers from all over

Australia, The Age reported Thursday last week.

The affected executives include Sak Ryopponen, former Asia-

Pacific regional director for Saab Automobile AB, marketing

general manager Bob Maron, and sales general manager Shane

Priest.

According to a source at the company, Reynolds & Reynolds was

dissatisfied by the group's financial performance and the move

was aimed to cut costs and revamp the management structure.

Carsales.com.au has sustained losses reaching $7.16 million

since it went online in September 1998, leaving net assets of

$2.59.

The company incurred a December half-year loss of $2.98 million,

including a $1 million write-off of pre-paid advertising. In the

last full year, the company incurred losses amounting to $3.49

million.

The Web site, which employs 30 people across the mainland

states, features a list of over 30,000 used cars on behalf of

subscribing dealers, and data on new cars and new car dealers.

FPV accelerates despite retrenchments

Ford and partner Prodrive have committed to the future of the Ford Performance Vehicles joint venture despite last week's sudden retrenchment of virtually all the company's top management, reports BRUCE NEWTON.

Managing director Sak Ryopponen, plus eight senior marketing, finance and product support staff were given their marching orders in what appears to be a massive cost-cutting exercise. Mr Ryopponen had been MD for seven months.

The retrenchments came just days after FPV announced a record 2144 sales in 2006. Created in 2002 as a direct competitor for the successful Expensive Daewoo Special Vehicles operation, FPV modifies and markets Falcon V8 and turbocharged six-cylinder sedans and utilities.

The range includes the GT, Typhoon and Pursuit Ute. These cars have a higher performance level and price than the standard Falcon XR sports models built by Ford.

While the assumption is that financially struggling Ford has driven the blood-letting, it has a 49 per cent minority ownership.

Prodrive, the international automotive engineering and development company, owns 51 per cent and appears to be setting the agenda.

Prodrive chief operating officer and senior FPV board member Clive Scrivener flew from Britain for meetings on Thursday from which Mr Ryopponen was excluded. The retrenchments were made first thing on Friday.

FPV is now under the control of Prodrive AT (Automotive Technologies) Asia-Pacific managing director Bryan Mears. He has promised that a sales and marketing general manager will be recruited by the end of February. He has also committed to expanding FPV's sales, marketing and dealer support.

"There was a recognition that FPV had achieved a certain amount of great things but that something more was needed and this was the right way to go about it," Ford Australia public affairs manager Sinead McAlary told Drive. "It's a change in structure but none of the product we had planned in the pipeline changes."

It's probably due to the half arssed effort he put into the Force models that did it.

"We need luxo FPVs, I know, rip the wing of a GTP and F6, put in some different seats with wierd colours, add some dodgy woodgrain and whack an extra $10k on th price of the F6, for the 8, uuummm, lets make it $500. Yeah, that'll show HSV who's boss."
