Now I'm in a real quandary, yesterday my PS2 died  :roflmbo: So what do I do?

Option 1: buy a Xbox 360 now and miss out on the awesomeness that will be Gran Turismo 5 but sleep safe in the knowledge that I can get it chipped to play burnt games that are like 8 for $100.

Option 2: buy a PS3 of ebay from Japan or the states, bask in the glory that will be GT5, get to play all my PS2 games but due to the blue ray technology be very unlikely to have it chipped and buy burnt games.

Option 3: buy a PS2 now for $170 and wait till the PS3 is launched then decide

Option 4: do nothing now and decide when the PS3 is launched using all the extra time I have to do something productive instead of sitting in font of the TV :crybaby:

Any thoughts?

Ended up going with option 1, got the games just waiting for the console to get back from being chipped which fingers crossed should be tomorrow. As a result I have all my PlayStation 2 games and accessories on eBay http://search.ebay.com.au/_W0QQsassZj-bomb3000QQhtZ-1

I thought that all you had to do to play burned games on the x360 was to upgrade the firmware of the dvd drive?

how much are they charging for the chips?

and do you know if you have a 1st gen or 2nd gen dvd drive?

I heard that they could only upgrade the 1st gen ones..

cheers

I'll be buying neither a PS3 or a 360. They are basically a PC nowadays, they are going too nerdy for me. The Wii on the other hand, now that looks like fun. AND it's cheaper.

I don't know if it's an actually chip or what they do to it (I just used that phrase for lack of a better word) but it cost me $85 installed and it now plays burnt games whatever the hell they did to it.

The console was brand new and I did ask them about modding the later ones as I had heard similar things but the guys I used said they had some problems cracking the new ones when they first come out but there now able to do it no worries.

But anyone in Melbourne looking to have one modded give these guys a go http://cavernimports.com.au/ I was very happy with them, nice guys to deal with to.

$1000 + cost of games can be better spent elsewhere.

Not only that it hasn't received the best reviews so far and I think they will struggle this time around. It's basically on par in terms of graphics with the 360 so you are paying an extra $400 for the BR player. A cheap BR player for sure, but console dvd players are bad at best..

The PS3 is actually twice as powerful as 360. the hardware is almost twice as powerful as the latest gaming PC also. In terms of hardware as compared to a gamming PC is excellent value for money, but obvoulsy a ps3 can only play games.

do a google search on the E3 convention from 2006 when the PS3 was introduced by Sony, lots of vids to look at. I play a lot of online games and regularly upgrade my PC but the PS3 rocks.

I will be getting one.

I see Sony have suckered you too. It reminds me of the time that Sony promised Toy Story graphics on the PS2 - we know how well that turned out. How can it be said that the PS3 is twice as powerful when the Cell chip is unproven technology?

On paper the PS3 is far superior to the 360 but once you start number crunching the 360 is a better performer as a games console...

For a technical unbiased read:

And for pretty pictures:

The games you saw at E3 2005 and 2006 were pre-rendered videos running on a computer. Even the developers of Killzone (2005) have admitted that the video presentation was a pre-rendered display that they had 2 months to complete prior to E3. The same thing happened with the Xbox 360 at E3 2005 - They were running their games from a Apple computer with similiar specs to that of the 360.

I don't care what people buy but it just irks me when people believe the crap that Sony spout all the time. Most of the articles that you read about how good the PS3 was going to be were actual press releases released by Sony themselves. Funnily enough there were no press releases from Sony when they started dropping features from the PS3 - that info had to be dug for.

the nintendo is alot of fun but is not in the same league as the other consoles as far as simulation games go (forza/gt for example)

You own a performance vehicle. Spend the $700 on premium fuel and head down the great ocean road. Now that's simulation. :spoton:

I brought a Wii about an hour after posting in this thread. It is great to play something original, as opposed to just a beefed up version of the old Xbox/Playstation. Now, to figure out how to hook this thing up to the net...

yeh Wii is great fun

people talk about graphics and all that jazz.. when u r playing the game you dont notice all those little details about "oo did u see that leaf drop 200m away".. im sure you would rahter "wow I am swinging this controler around like an idiot.. AND I LUV IT!"

its an original idea & I can wait till they expand the technology to more games :spit:

my 2 cents

I have the PS3 for almost a week now and it is great. I have it hooked up to the net and I downloaded the new GT HD game. It is great picture perfect. It is very detailed to the point you can see the cracks in the road. Helps to have a LCD tv as well I guess.

I am buying my games from ebay for almost half the price sold in Australian stores.

The blu-ray seams okay. Havent seen a movie on it yet.
