Swimsuit models highlight road danger

A GOLD COAST man upset with drivers on a busy motorway ignoring road safety today lined up 10 placard-waving swimsuit models on the side of the road to highlight his message.

Brisbane police were at the scene on the Gateway Motorway at Eight Miles Plains this morning, investigating whether Michael Brosnan had broken traffic laws himself with his distracting stunt.

The professional male and female models took their positions at 7am (AEST), holding up signs appealing for motorists to keep left unless overtaking and to keep traffic flowing.

Mr Brosnan, who does not belong to any group, organised the stunt after having no luck lobbying the State Government to erect its road safety signs.

"The reality is, all across Australia the law is keep left unless overtaking and it's very well-signed in the southern states and NSW and north of Brisbane, but there's not one sign between Coolangatta and north of Brisbane," Mr Brosnan said during the roadside protest.

He said signs were needed to stop increasing road-rage by drivers irritated by motorists disobeying the law.

He said he had planned to advertise in newspapers and put up his own signs but he thought the models would get the message across better.

"It's been very encouraging," he said of the hour-long protest. (Motorists have) given us the thumbs-up and a few toots of the horn."

Brisbane police were less encouraging, with a spokeswoman saying officers were assessing the situation to decide whether Mr Brosnan's protest was itself a danger or broke any laws.

"It's a stunt by an individual who seems to have a gripe," she said.

Actually the law is not keep left unless over taking.

It is that you must keep left at or above 90km/h or where indicated (e.g. passing lanes).

In NSW it only applies on roads with a speed limit greater than 80KPH. "Not keep left on multi-lane road in speed limit greater than 80Km/h'

Gives me the sh*ts more than anything when ma and pa kettle sit in the fast lane on the freeway and do well below the speed limit. Truckies real good at it too.

Glad to see some of you do feel the same. I drive from work to home daily on Parramatta Road and the fastest lane to drive there is the inner left lane. Everyone drives on the right or middle lane which gives others no chance of overtaking. The same applies to the M4, M5, M7 and so on.

Why drivers can’t understand such a simple rule is beyond me. Keep to the left regardless of what speed limit the road has, and check your rear view mirror of vehicles that want to overtake you and be courteous enough to make way for faster traffic regardless of what speed they are trying to achieve (it’s their risk if they get caught!)

One word of caution, please do head checks when moving to the left lane because I mostly overtake from the left and wouldn’t want to have an ugly incident. I get frequent nightmares of people coming onto my lane without knowing that I exist and as a result I’ll try to react by moving away further left (I hate braking!) and end up hitting the pole or something else on the pavement. BTW who will be a fault if I do end up crashing my car?
