Any Ideas For Group Buys? - Window shopping for blokes...

Could you tell us why it's not true?

 

 

 

I think he's saying that the cutting is likely to affect the structural integrity of the chassis.

 

Personally, I'm inclined to garee with ratter, cutting any major part of the car is going to weaken it. In the event of a serious head-on collission, that bar would probably not crumple as it had in the laboratory and it could potentially stuff up the timing of the air bags going off for example. I'm happy to be proved wrong if someone's bothered to have an engineer certify it, but I would put my money on the strength of the bar being weakened.

I suppose it depends on how you look at it. I see the only crush points in the front of the car being any tube running length ways to the car. I totally agree that if you cut out any spot welds on the crash bar then you will see some difference in the way that piece of steel will stretch/bend. The two chassis rails along the bottom of the engine bay are the "shock absorbing" part of the crush. The crash bar at the front would only prevent the chassis rails from peeling away from each other.

If you stay away from spot welds/any welds and factory creases in the crash bar then I can't see you affecting structural stability. But this is my opinion and maybe some food for thought.

We must be talking about a different bar mate. Coz cutting out the crash bar will be ludicrous and as you say will affect the structural integrity of the car.

On FG's the support bar across the radiator support panel must be removed with pretty much all the aftermarket coolers except the 2 stepped coolers

That support member material is very brittle, I can't see that affecting anything structural and definatly would not affect any crush points. I was talking about the steel cross member in front of the cooler that helps stop the chassis from spreading to ensure the chassis rails crush (absorb shock) instead of separating in a crash.

I can't see a manufacturer spending one cent more than necessary on a vehicle, so if it wasn't required for any reason other than structural integrity why would it be fitted in the first place?

Yeah it may make two tenths of fck all difference, but it's something to keep in mind when it comes to the finer points of legalities and/or your insurance potentially being voided in a serious crash if that is a concern to you.
