How To Drive An Auto

Hey all,

Just picked up my XR6T BF2 auto in Neo.

It's the first time I've ever owned an auto and wonder about some of the simple stuff like:

When you are sitting at the lights do you leave it in D and stand on the foot brake pedal, or drop it into N and pull on the handbrake, or click it back to P with no handbrake.

Just doesn't feel right just riding the foot brake in D, as with the manual you would always be in neutral or in 1st with clutch down and handbake on.

Interested in what others do, if there is a way that is best for the engine/trans - or if it just doesn't matter at all.

IT'S JUST THE LOUD PEDAL AND THE STOP PEDAL THAT GET OPERATED BY ME (oops - sorry about caps lock).

Not much point in having an auto otherwise I reckon

When I had my auto I would always knock it out of gear whilst waiting at lights. When the light went green I put it back in gear and off I go

Take it from me leave it in drive because every time you put in to park and than back into drive you are putting unnecersy wera on the bands and clutches because this is when they are under most stress.

PICS of your car and good to see another Neo. Ive noticed if you put it into nutral the cars revs go up a lil and dont see the need to put extra stress on the transmission by moving all the time. I think you should push it over to PERF mode and leave it there while its new. Mine always stays there and only goes in normal drive mode on the freeway. I also think the ZF box is bullet proof and wont matter how you use it eitherway.

First of all welcome.

Normally most people panick the other way round.

For my peace of mind do me a favour, go out with one of your mates you can trust not to thrash the car or have an accident and go for a drive into the city or busy shopping strip. After 10 minutes watching him it should put your mind at ease.

The big no no is going form drive to reverse or reverse to drive while the car is moving otherwise you will be fine.;

You put the thing in D (for Drag) and leave it there. One of the reasons it's called the "lazy man's box". If you want to be changing every time you come to a stop light you might as well have bought a manual.
