When you are driving along and there are two lanes and then they merge into one who has the right of way, left lane, right lane or the person who is furtherest (is that a word?!) ahead when the lane ends?

The other day I was driving along in the left lane (as you should when not overtaking) and the lanes merged into one. There was a car in the right lane, he was behind me but as the lane ended he sped up to overtake me. I held my line but then had to put two wheels in the other lane at the last second to avoid a collision with this turkey (next time I won't), luckily there was no one in this lane. Who is in the right here?

I would suggest common sense would prevail and whoever is behind at the merge, should give way

Which lane is ending. I know in ACT they just wack FORM ONE LANE on the road.

See if lane one is ending I would think that due to this the car in lane one would have to give way to the car in lane 2.

Or you could just use "Who has their nose in front" rule

I believe if neither lane ends, ie the lane marking just stops, its the car in front has ROW. But if one lane definatly ends, ie the lane marking distincty ends or converges at another lane marker, then the lane that does not end has ROW.

I've always used the 'merge when safe to do so' rule. If that means I have to brake then so be it.

I generally let people in unless they are sitting right beside me - in that case I'll speed up to allow them in behind me without them running out of road.

But there's always one asshole that will do what happened to you. It used to be the young(er) drivers that left their manners at home when driving, but it seems to have spread across the board now. Or perhaps I'm just becoming more cynical as I get older

I had an old bloke (had to've been in his late 70's) tailgate me so close that I could only see his windshield in the mirror. He didn't take to kindly when I tapped the brake lights. I refuse to speed up in those circumstances cos he's not going to pay my speeding fine should I be caught out..

Yeah I just usually keep merging in those circumstances. The way I see it noone "wants" to have an accident(most people anyway). You just gotta call their bluff when they speed up to block you and keep going. The way I see it, they got a brake pedal. Just make em use it! :spoton:

I can't stand f#@kwits that don't have enough common decency to let you in. Its simple rudeness. Like that one car spot further forward will get them to their destination SOOOO much quicker...

Its these morons, and the other ones who stop in the merge lane till there is a gap that cause half the traffic jams in this country!

When two lanes merge AND there is a dotted line for one of the lanes to cross at the merging zone, the vehicle which has to cross the broken line must give way. If there is no broken line then the vehicle furthest ahead has right of way. So make sure if you hit anyone whilst merging that you are ahead!
