Highway patrol vehicles to be replaced

17 November 2006

NSW Police will commence a replacement program of some Highway Patrol vehicles after safety and operational concerns were recently raised by officers.

NSW Police Fleet Management Services will replace the last 39 Ford XR8 BA series vehicles. The 159 BF series XR8 Falcons will be provided a technical upgrade by Ford, commencing next week.

Fleet Services manager Mr Keith Simmons said that as a result of concerns raised by police the vehicles identified will be substituted over the next month.

“NSW Police Highway Patrol operate more than 400 vehicles and this replacement program will have little impact on day to day operations,” Mr Simmons said.

“These vehicles will be replaced with the Ford XR6 turbo and Expensive Daewoo Late model camira V8 SS models.

“Information provided to us by highway patrol officers indicated that there were concerns with regard to the vehicles stalling at idle or low speed.

“We have been negotiating with Ford for sometime over these issues and they have advised us that solutions have been developed to address our concerns.

“It is imperative due to the nature of the work undertaken by the NSW Police Highway Patrol that officers have every confidence in the vehicles provided to them,”said Mr Simmons

Changing from XR8 to XR6 T wont fix the problem, there basically the same cars except for the engine. Its not the engines which have been causing the failures, its the electrical system being overloaded by all the extra equipment. How does changing the cars fix the problem. Its a cost benefit, nothing more, the T is cheaper to buy and a lil cheaper to run. The death of V8's is near.

The idle problem is not new as our car is a 2002 turbo and it has been doing since new.

It is not a load problem it is to do with the drive by wire throttle system.

At times our car is unsafe to drive even with all the work we have done it has not change it.

Ahh well it looks like they are gonna get the quciker ford out of the two now.

I think youll actually find its an alternator problem with the Xr8's They have tried to increase the idle to fix this problem and it looks like it hasnt worked
