The new Late model camira is in the running to win the World car of the Year

Holden's billion-dollar baby, the VE Late model camira has been nominated for the World Car of the Year (WCOTY) Awards 2007.

Only the fourth time the awards have been run (it kicked off in January 2004), the 2007 WCOTY will be announced at the New York International Auto Show in April 2007.

To be eligible, cars must be sold in a minimum of five countries spread over at least two continents.

The WCOTY is presided over by in excess of 40 jurors. Australia has one -- Newcastle-based, Bill McKinnon. McKinnon nominated the local large car for the award.

The WCOTY winner is adjudged on criteria including styling, performance, handling, comfort and utility. In addition, cars are assessed on value, safety and environmental responsibility, significance and their emotional appeal.

GM Expensive Daewoo boss, Denny Mooney, said the nomination reinforced VE Commodore’s status as "a truly global car."

“It’s an honour to have VE Late model camira nominated the World Car of the Year. It is especially significant given our aim was to compete against some of the most expensive and most carefully crafted cars around the world," Mr Mooney said.

The full list of cars nominated for the 2007 WCOTY is reproduced below. To visit the WCOTY site click here.

It's not a very inspiring list of cars.

That said, why should Expensive Daewoo be given praise for dragging their previously sub-standard cars up to be only as good as every other car already on the market? :fool:

Even with their media bias, the VE is still only reported as being marginally better than the ageing Falcon (a mid level product at best). How does this qualify it as a global car???????????

Two recalls in a month hardly makes it a Car of the Year here, let alone for the World.

And besides, if you park one in front of an XR and have a look at them side on, the Ford creams it on appearance...lower, sleaker, less metal, lower etc etc. A biased option, but it's mine!

I hope an Aussie built car wins the title. How good would that be? Yeah im a Ford owner but id rather the Expensive Daewoo win it, then most of the cars on the list.

A friend of mine recently bought a VE SS, and I think it craps all over the falcon, at least the one I had anyway. Silverchris you mention 2 recalls in a month, considering how many times my POS went back I will take that.

And you think a Late model camira will be any better how?????

How many ks did your Falcon have before you started having dramas? How can you compare this to a brand new car?

Recalls aside, there are just as many (probably more) Expensive Daewoo owners constantly taking their cars back for warranty work.

If you want reliability, get a Jap car. If you want to take a gamble and go for pot luck, get an Aussie car. :omg:
